From the Eagles Nest...
What’s a fricative? Did you know that’s called a “morpheme?”
Please do not be surprised if your second grader comes home and asks you these questions! Our school division is now utilizing a research-based course of study for teachers called LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling). It is fantastic! While it emphasizes instructional strategies similar to the Orton-Gillingham method, the first part focuses more on the brain science of language acquisition and, specifically, sound development and phonemic awareness. This approach helps ALL students: those in the early stages of reading and writing, as well as those students who are encountering new, multisyllabic words (not just in how to pronounce, but also how to define a new word based on its morphemes).
Let’s Celebrate Walk-tober!
As someone who grew up walking ¾ mile everyday to his elementary school, I am happy to announce that Mountain View Elementary School will be participating in International Walk to School Day on October 6. If you or your child live in the neighborhoods of Belmont or Monte Vista we would love for them to participate!
Walk to School Day requires adults to walk with children. It is fine, even encouraged, for adults to walk groups of children to school. So if you can’t make it but your neighbor is walking their child please talk to your neighbor about walking both kids in.
To get an idea of how many students may be walking on October 6, please email Mr. Miller at dmiller@rockingham.k12.va.us with your name and your student’s name. If you would be willing to have another student walk with you please include your address so we can match you with students who need an adult to walk with!
The Culmination of Kindergartner Color Study!
It was so fun to take today’s “rainbow day” to the next level!

From the School Nurse...
As COVID numbers in our area are rising we need to come together as a team to keep our children healthy and safe.
DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IF:
They have to take any medications to make them feel better or reduce fever
Have had a fever of 100.4 or higher in the last 24 hours
they have a bad cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, a runny nose that will soil more than 2 masks per day
Someone in your household is sick and being tested for COVID
If you think that you have been exposed to COVID DO NOT send the child to school without consulting the school first.
If you are unsure of household contact or have any questions if your child should attend school please call the office at 540-438-1965 and ask to speak with the Nurse.
Please refer to the following Daily Home Screening tool before sending your child.
MASKS
Face coverings are required to be worn indoors at all times, in accordance with the state public health order date August 12, 2021, other than mask breaks and designated eating times. Face coverings are to be worn regardless of social distancing. Teachers will help/train students, as needed, to wear face coverings according to these guidelines. Parents are responsible for providing students with face masks.
Students that do not comply with wearing a face covering will be sent to the office. If the issue cannot be resolved, the student will be placed in an area distanced from others to wait until a parent picks them up.

STUDENT GROWTH ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
Students in Virginia public schools will take growth assessments in grades 3-8 in reading and mathematics. These assessments, which are mandated by legislation, are not SOL tests. Rather, these tests will be used to determine a baseline for measuring academic progress during the school year. For this year, these fall growth assessments are based on content from the previous grade level to help identify unfinished learning due to the pandemic. The online version of these assessments are shorter than SOL tests and do not have a passing or failing score. Students will take these assessments in both fall and spring of the 2021-2022 school year to measure growth during the school year. Individual student scores will be provided with details on how students performed on each test item, but the growth assessments do not include a passing/failing score. The focus of these assessments is on identifying what students have already learned as well as the skills they may need additional help with during the school year. For more information please visit https://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/test_administration/growth-assessment/index.shtml
MVES Fall 2021 Growth Assessment Schedule
Wednesday, September 22nd Mathematics, grades 3, 4, 5
Thursday, September 23rd Reading, grades 3, 4, 5
The assessments students will take - in fall 2021 only - will be based on the previous grade level's content. The intent is to assist in the identification of unfinished learning from 2020-2021 due to the pandemic as well as enable students to show growth during the current school year.

The parent portal is an online portal accessible anywhere on the web that parents can log in to and see all of their children in one place, their grades, assignments, scores, attendance, schedules, and teacher comments for each school your children attend.
Parents need to contact the school to get access information to create an account in PowerSchool.
