Weekly Warrior Update

September 18, 2022

Big picture

This week was a difficult week on campus as we lost one of our Warrior students, Jesus Garcia. Jesus was a Senior here at Westlake and has spent the last four year in our LEAP program. As he was able, Jesus was often seen around campus in the lunch room, in elective classes and participating in our Unified Sports program. We ask that you keep Jesus’ family in your thoughts during this most difficult time. Also, we are thankful that a Go Fund Me page has been created on behalf of the family in Jesus’ honor and the proceeds will go directly to support the Garcia Family. If you would like to donate and contribute, please click on the following link: https://gofund.me/8c0f43ce

These times of tragedy are difficult for all of us to handle; however, please know that our Counseling team is here to help and support any student that may need assistance in coping with this tragic news. Any student can come to the Counseling Office or Wellness Center to speak with a counselor and receive support. Lastly, in times of tragedy the strength that we have with each other will help get us through. I am proud of our Warrior Family and the support that we have given to each other during this difficult time.

On another note, it was great to see so many parents attending our Back-to-School Night last week and getting a glimpse into our classes on campus. We hope that this connection will allow our students to continue with their academic success in their classes. Don’t forget that the Quarter 1 Progress Report grading period ends this Friday (9/23) so please go onto Q and check your grades.

Thank you for reviewing all this information and here is to a great week in Warrior Country!

Section 5 of Article IX of the State of California Constitution guarantees students a “free public education.” The State Supreme Court concluded in the 1984 case of Hartzell v. Connell (35 Cal.3d.899 (1984)), “that all educational activities carried on by public school districts, extra-curricular as well as curricular, must be without cost to the students who participate in such activities.” This same ruling found that “mandatory fees for participating in such extra-curricular activities as drama, music, and athletic competition were illegal under the State Constitution.” Furthermore, they also rejected the argument that “fees could be charged so long as the district waived fees for students who were financially unable to pay.”
