Welcome To Freshman Year!

English 9

Welcome:

Welcome to English 9! My name is Jasmine Arnold. This year in English you will learn so much. You will read short, love, adventure, and war stories. It will be a challenging year, but worth it in the end.

Content:

Divergent: This book is about a Dystopian society. Tris has just joined a new faction when strange things start happening. Tris and her friends work to get to the bottom of things.

Romeo & Juliet: This is a tragic love story. Romeo and Juliet are from two different families who absolutely hate each other. The trouble starts when they fall in love, but can't be together.

Monster: This book is about a teenager on trial for murder. He says he didn't do it, but the evidence says otherwise. This book takes you through the whole trial process to decide if Steve Harmon is guilty or not guilty.

Group Lit Circles: Mrs. Allen will assign you a book to read for your book of the month. You sit at a table with people reading the same book as you for the whole unit. You will do activities with your group members about your book.

Independent Reading & Book Talks:

You will read a different book every month this year. Weekends are your friend. Read as much as you can during the weekend. With so much homework during the week you'll be overwhelmed and fall behind in your reading. Don't let book talks make you nervous. Just tell exactly what you read.

My Fave:

I loved Group Lit Circles. I liked doing our own reading, but then getting to talk about it with other people.

My Not So Fave:

I struggled with poetry. Writing creatively is not easy for me. I would rather have directions on what to write about.

Advice:

Always stay organized. You'll regret not doing so later. Always do your homework, it can really impact your grade. Have fun reading! Find a book your interested in and monthly reading will be so much easier.

Top 5 Ways To Stay Organized:

1.) Number all your papers with the right section

2.) USE A BINDER

3.) Always put papers back where they go

4.) Keep EVERYTHING for English in your binder

5.) Put your name on all papers
