Message from Mr. Dorken and Mr. Friedman
Dear Lyon and Pleasant Ridge Families,
As we approach the final days of the 2019-20 school year, we wanted to share some reflections on what is likely to be a year that we will all remember for years to come. First and foremost, we hope that this newsletter finds you and your loved ones healthy and continuing to make the best of our current circumstances.
Remember when we thought it was a big deal that it snowed on Halloween?! Little did we know that the patience, flexibility and positive mindsets that some unseasonable weather required during that special day (“This isn’t so bad…”) would pale in comparison to what we all would need to summon for over two months of remote learning during a global pandemic. When we say we’ve made it to the end of another school year, that is no small statement this time around. This finish line is truly a special one. Every single member of our learning community, children and adults, should feel extremely proud of the strength and perseverance that have been exhibited during this period of time. Navigating a challenge like this with such grace does not happen by accident. We are grateful to work in such a supportive, cooperative, and caring community. These qualities are present all of the time in the Lyon/Pleasant Ridge cluster and across Glenview, and they have never been more apparent (and critical) as they have been of late. Thank you for whatever role you’ve played in helping make the past several weeks better for someone else - your child, a neighbor, a community member you’ve never met.
The closure of a school year brings to mind what an extremely special time in children’s lives the elementary school years are, how quickly time passes, and what a privilege it is to share in this time with you. It is so gratifying to think back to the start of our school year and realize just how much our students have grown and changed. They’ve worked really hard and nothing they have accomplished should be taken for granted. Neither should the many moments of joy and wonder. May there be many more to come in the summer days ahead. Until we return for a new school year, whatever shape that will take, we hope that you have a great summer filled with lots of quality time together as a family. We strongly recommend that regular reading be among your children’s activities. Regardless of what your summer brings, we hope you find plenty of time to enjoy your children, their interests, and the world from their perspective at this special time in their childhood.
Be on the lookout for updates from our school district regarding plans for the start of our 2020-21 school year as well as our summer newsletters (in early August). Until then, take care and be well!
Sincerely,
Kevin Dorken
Lyon Principal

Important Reminder
Here are some important details regarding the Drive Through Pick-Up/Drop-Off Day that will occur at Lyon on Monday, June 8 (9am - 5pm). This day is intended for you to pick up your child(ren)'s belongings and drop off school-owned books. The plans for the day are as follows:
If at all possible, please follow this schedule*:
9:00 - 11:00 am - Kindergarten
11:00 - 1:00 pm - 1st Grade
1:00 - 3:00 pm - 2nd Grade
* We realize these times may not work for all families, and many families have children in more than one grade. You do not need to make more than one trip, and we are simply asking families to come during the designated times, if possible, to alleviate overcrowding.
- Please ensure there is ample trunk space in your car before you come on 6/8.
- Stay in your car when you arrive at Lyon and proceed to our student drop off/pick up area (Door B) at the front of the school building, in a single file car line.
- Display clearly through your car window a sign with your child's first and last name, grade and homeroom teacher name.
- Please have a mask handy to put on if you must open your window to talk to a staff member.
- If possible, open your trunk remotely from inside your vehicle.
- A staff member will retrieve your child's belongings and place them in your trunk.
- If you have books to return, please have them ready in your trunk for a staff member to collect according to these categories:
- LRC (Lyon Library) books - leave loose in your trunk
- Homeroom teacher/classroom library books - place in a bag labeled with your child's name, grade level and teacher name
- Reading Support books - place in a bag labeled with your child's name and "Reading Support Room"
While we will be very happy to see you on June 8, we aim to limit contact as much as possible on this day. We appreciate very much your cooperation with our plans.
D34 Summer Remote Learning
District 34 is offering Remote Summer Learning, a free program that will guide students through four, grade-appropriate inquiry-based projects. Though there are no hard deadlines, the Summer Learning Team is working on the platform that will launch a project each week from June 11-July 2.
Students who are returning to D34 in the fall will keep their iPads over the summer to allow participation in this learning opportunity (and other independent learning). There’s no need to register! We will send more information on accessing the platform and other guidelines for participating in early June.
