We Are Off and Running!
The 2019-2020 school year has begun. We are all moved into the new building and actively engaging in our new spaces. For the first time ever, we opened the school year off with a whole school pep rally that included a wonderful artist, grade level games, and the Harlem Wizards. The students had a blast and were able to kick the school year off on a high note.
Each month you will be able to read about the amazing opportunities, achievements, and events that Stoughton High School Students and Faculty/Staff have been doing throughout the previous month in the "Black Knights Monthly" newsletter.

Students have come prepared with open minds to learn and have been fully participating, trying to speak Spanish and interact with their peers. In the 3C and 2H classes students have created vocabulary games in Spanish and there was a champion group crowned in each class. Students are using Google Classroom easily and chromebooks in almost every class period to practice and complete assignments
In French, the French IIC students are beginning their study of a hit Franco-Algerian
Pop-Rai fusion song and using it as a starting point to our study of French colonization. French IV students are firming up their knowledge of the subjunctive present verb form, a structure much more widely used in French than in English. French V students are studying the state of the environment and health policies in various francophone cultures.
Implementing OWL is off to an interesting start with each class taking it in their own direction. Students are going to put their own spin on the classic French cartoon characters Asterix and Obelix. And with French 3 they are all doing a great job in their one-on-one interviews that will serve as the basis for our growth measurements and goals. Teachers are incorporating more movement and circle time into their lessons by teaching the Organic World Language (OWL) method.
Latin I students are learning the endings for singular and plural nouns, adjectives and verbs. Latin II students are strengthening their grammar skills by learning the Demonstrative Pronouns hic and ille. Advanced Latin Students are reviewing Perfect Passive Participles and their use in Ablatives Absolutes as well as indirect statement constructions.
Chinese I students are learning Chinese Syllable (structure, Pinyin and pronunciation), Chinese culture and greetings. Chinese II students are reviewing the dialogues about family, hobbies, visiting friends, shopping and transportation.

We are enjoying being in the high class studio! The students are liking the green screen and news set and are getting a chance to become familiar with the studio equipment. On TVs throughout the building students are able to see and hear announcements and watch the news daily. We are grateful for the ability to show our news broadcast throughout the day around the building!
SHS Fine Arts Department
National Art Honor Society is having informational meetings for new and returning members Tuesday 10/1 and Thursday 10/3 in A225, see Mrs. Schlegel-Muse more information. MassArt is visiting us after school on October 1st to talk to students considering a college/career path of visual arts and design. See Mr. Fontinha if you're interested!
The Marching Band has been in full swing since August and has already had several successful performances of their 2019 show, "Anyway the Wind Blows." The choirs are gearing up for Singers' Knight on October 16th, when they'll perform together with OMS students on our brand-new auditorium stage. Auditions for our fall musical production, "Mary Poppins," resulted in a large and enthusiastic cast that is working hard to put the show together for its November premiere.

A Message from SPS Health Services on Vaping
Vaping has been on the minds of many parents lately. As you may have read in the news, vaping among teens is on the rise throughout Massachusetts and across the country. With the recent incidents of vaping-related lung disease, (currently 530 nationwide), the SPS RN Team is encouraging parents to speak to their children regarding the serious risks of vaping, nicotine addiction, and vaping-related lung illnesses. While the incidence of vaping is concerning, according to the 2019 Stoughton Youth Health Survey, MOST SHS students report that they do not vape. Well done! Talking to your child is a key strategy to prevent vaping. According to the survey, SHS students who believed that their parents disapproved of vaping were nearly 3 times less likely to vape than their peers. We are hopeful that as a community we can decrease vaping use among our students through conversation, education, and cessation support. Please see the links below for more information.
