Davis/Martin Peek at the Week
August 22nd - August 26th
Dear Parents,
A fantastic first week of school is officially in the books! We had a great time getting to know one another, as well as becoming familiar with classroom routines and procedures. Students even created classroom mission statements for the year. Be on the lookout for photos of those on our Facebook page. Speaking of Facebook... if you have not joined our page checkout the reminders section of this newsletter to learn how you can!
This week's newsletter contains A LOT of information. Below you can read about what your child will be learning this week in all subject areas. You can also see what homework will be assigned, as well as any upcoming tests. Reminders and important dates are at the very bottom.
Reading logs will begin this week. Students should have brought home a letter on Friday. The bottom portion should come back signed, so we know you are aware of the expectations for this weekly assignment. Also, be on the lookout for our first Scholastic book order going home on Monday!
Students will also begin completing math logs this week. Students will be bringing home a letter explaining their assignment and expectations on Monday. The bottom portion of this one should also be returned to school.
Mrs. Davis & Mrs. Martin
THIS WEEK
IN LITERACY & SOCIAL STUDIES:
- Students will be learning expectations for Reading Workshop. Last week, students checked out books from our classroom library. This week, students will begin Independent Reading. They will be responsible for keeping track of the books they read throughout the year by recording them on a "reading record" sheet. They will also keep track of their daily reading, using their weekly reading logs.
- Parts of Speech: We will be creating a flip book as a tool for students to refer back to throughout the year. We will review and practice using the 8 most common parts of speech.
- Guided Read Aloud: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. Strategy focus: visualization, skill focus: characterization.
- Students will begin using their Writer's Notebooks. We will be discussing what a Writer's Notebook is and how writers come up with ideas for their writing.
- DIBELS testing (fluency)
SOCIAL STUDIES:
- Continents & Oceans review, TEST on FRIDAY
IN MATH & SCIENCE:
- Students will be learning about equivalent fractions, strategies to compare fractions, fractions greater than one, and also begin added and subtracting like mixed numbers.
