Bulldog Blast

November 18, 2020

Hello Families! This a reminder about Northwood’s attendance policy.

At Northwood, we follow Pennsylvania’s state laws on truancy. The same laws apply whether we are virtual, hybrid, or fully in-school. This is the attendance policy:

  • If your child is not logged on to the class Zoom, this will be marked as an unexcused absence. Parents must submit a note to the school within three days to excuse the absence.
  • At the 3rd unexcused absence, a legal truancy notice will be sent to you, the parent/guardian, via email and postal mail.
  • At the 6th unexcused absence, the school will contact the parent/guardian in an effort to set up an attendance meeting. In the meeting, we will discuss the causes of the attendance issue and come up with a plan to help remove any barriers to the student’s attendance.
  • At the 10th unexcused absence, a truancy referral should be submitted to the Office of Attendance & Truancy. For grades K-3, a Department of Human Services (or DHS) referral will be submitted. For grades 4-8th, a referral to Family Court will be submitted.

Our school staff values your child’s education, and I know you do too. Please make sure your child is logged on to Zoom at 8:30am Monday through Thursday. Friday’s asynchronous work is also counted towards your child’s attendance.

Are you longing for more opportunities to engage meaningfully with Northwood's parent

community during this remote climate? Then do not miss the opportunity to connect with one another tomorrow (Thursday, November 19th) for our next Parent Virtual Cafe.

There will be three different times in the morning (8am), afternoon (12pm), and evening (7pm) to choose from; all grades are welcome in every session. Another perk of joining? You have the chance to win an activity kit!

See the flier below for all of the details, and CLICK ON THIS ZOOM LINK to join any of the three sessions.

A Month of Giving Thanks

*We are still looking for your submissions for this month's Bulldog Spotlight*

While this year's season of giving may look different than we are used to, we want to highlight how gratitude comes in many different shapes and sizes. This week, set an intention to ask your child: what do you feel thankful for right now?

You might learn something new when you ask! Is it the fact that they have learned a new skill in their after-school club? Maybe it's the comfort they find in snuggles from a family pet, or a warm hug from you? Send their answer and a photo of their smiling face (feel free to get creative here to incorporate the theme of gratitude) to Mrs. Smith at jsmith@northwoodcs.org.

The most stand-out submissions will be featured in the Bulldog Blast sent out during the last week of November.
