Connecting with the Counselor
This week, the 5th grade students started to identify what zones different scenarios might put them in. For example, they would most likely be in the Blue Zone when they first wake up in the morning because they are sleepy. Although some said they are in the Red Zone. ;) When they are sitting in class ready to listen and learn, they are in the Green Zone. If they found out that they won the lottery, they would be in the Yellow Zone. And, if they found out that they lost an assignment they worked really hard on, they might be in the Red Zone. Next week, students will have the opportunity to think about their own lives and times they might find themselves in each of the zones.
Discuss with your student...
1. Take turns thinking up different scenarios and ask each other what zone that particular scenario might put someone in.
6th, 7th, 8th Grade
This week, students focused on Working Memory as an important component of Executive Functioning.
Working memory is a skill that helps hold information in your mind in short-term while working with it. Working memory is important during note-taking, math problems and directions with multiple steps. If you find you have weak working memory skills, there are strategies that can help you.
Discuss with your student...
1. There were five strategies that were presented as a way to enhance your working memory. Which one do you use most often?
2. What are ways that working memory is beneficial to you in your activities outside of school?
Kansas Communities the Care Survey
Next week, students in 6th grade and 8th grade will be taking the Kansas Communities that Care Survey. This survey is 100% anonymous and provides the district with information about how we can support our students.
Parents can view a copy of the survey here: KCTC SURVEY. Please note that we give the "Core Survey" as well as the "Depression Suicide" and "Family Domain" under the Optional Modules.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the JWMS office.
