Math

This week in math, students were able to decompose three-digit numbers. Here is an example: 345 is the same as 3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 5 ones. Students also practiced the strategies they have learned for subtracting one-digit numbers from three-digit numbers. Along with these, they also subtracted two-digit numbers from three-digit numbers. Next week, we’re going to continue to work on subtraction with regrouping. The newsletter which was sent to your home this week also has great tips for you and your child.

Science

This week we are finishing up our unit on butterflies. We have learned all about the life cycle, and now, we are waiting for them to emerge as a butterfly. When they do emerge, we are going to have a butterfly release into our school flower garden.

Reader's Workshop

This week in Reader's Workshop we focused on writing good reading responses. In order to do this, we discussed the characteristics of a good reading response. Some of the important characteristics we discussed were:

Introduction

-Includes a hook, a sentence telling the name of the book as well as the authors, and a brief summary of the book.

Main Paragraph

-Where the opinions are stated and text evidence in provided to support the opinions.

Conclusion

-Wraps up the reading response.

Writer's Workshop

We used our time in Writer's Workshop to work on a Second Grade Memory Book. We were able to write about different memories that we had from our time in 2nd grade this year. We got a good start on our book, but we are going to continue to work on it.

Social Studies

Our research is coming along! We continued to research this week. The groups that finished their research began working on their project, which will showcase the information that the students learned through their research. Some of the project options are: state plates, acrostic poems, pamphlets, state t-shirts, and the application Poster My Wall.
