First Grade Happenings

Week of February 1, 2016

Yesterday your child received information regarding Birchview's "I Love to Read" month. You will find a calendar with all of February's exciting events, as well as a sneak peek at some of the books you'll see at our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair.

Student progress reports will be available on Wednesday, February 3rd after 4PM. You will have access to them through your online Skyward Family Access account. I will send an informational letter home early next week explaining the progress report in detail.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Language Arts

We completed our class reading adventure of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. Ask your student how Edward's journey ended and about the changes he went through along the way!

We will start our biography unit next week, beginning with the life of Abraham Lincoln. We will discuss the meaning of the words, past, present, future and timeline.

We began Unit 5 by using Base-10 blocks to build numbers. For example, to build the number 54 we used 5 longs (each worth 10) and 4 cubes (each worth one). It would look something like this: IIIII.... We will use this thinking to add much larger numbers. For example, 54+23=77 would look as follows:

IIIII.... + II... = IIIIIII.......

We will continue our work with this and place value next week.

Next week students will record observations of their plants' growth in their science notebooks. The vocabulary word "germination" will be one we discuss as we think about what happened to our seeds. We will also plant wheat, but not in the traditional way. Stay tuned!
