First Grade's January Newsletter

Math

This month students will build on their understanding of adding and subtracting within 20 to develop strategies for adding larger numbers. Students are also introduced to mentally adding 10. This unit introduces two-digit addition by having students compute two-digit + one-digit numbers.

Reading

Students are continuing to work on our Sun, Moon and Stars unit. We are working on characters and they change throughout the story, and the setting of the story. Students will also work on completing narrative writing.

Social Studies

We will continue to learn about holidays and the traditions we celebrate with each holiday. The next unit is focusing on how families can be the same and different. We will have great discussions about our own families and what makes them special.

January 26th - NO School Professional Development Day

Reminders and Important Information:

  • As the weather starts to change, please make sure your child has an appropriate jacket daily.

  • If possible, please send your child with a labeled water bottle daily to use throughout the day.

  • For students who are quarantined, your packet and Ipad’s will be available by the end of the following day in the office for pick up.

  • Reading Calendars are due at the end of every month. For students who have read, worked on heart words, or practiced what their teacher has assigned to them for 15 minutes for 15 days will receive a reward.

  • Please make sure that students leave all toys at home.
