COVID-19 Update
July 15, 2020
Dear Fenton Area Public Schools Families,
I hope all of you enjoyed the July 4th holiday with family and friends. 2020 has certainly been a roller coaster and I know we are all hoping for some stability soon. On June 30th, the Governor released the Return to School Roadmap, using the state’s Safe Start Plan in determining when schools will return to face to face instruction and what required guidelines school districts must follow when returning.
There are six phases within the Return to School Roadmap:
MI Safe Start Plan Phase 1-3: Virtual Learning
MI Safe Start Plan 4-5 : Face to Face instruction with required guidelines and recommendations.
MI Safe Start Plan Phase 6: Traditional Face to Face instruction
Everyone’s goal is to reach Phase 6, post pandemic, and return to a sense of normalcy. We will get there and we will work together to reach that end!
In the next few weeks, you will be receiving communication with details of the required guidelines we must follow, including cleaning, facial coverings, social distancing and other changes to our normal routines our staff and families are familiar with. These guidelines will vary depending on the phase our county is in and any executive orders from the state.
Our priorities, as we look forward to the first day of school (August 25th), are:
The safety of our students, staff and families.
The social and emotional state of our students, staff and families.
Providing a quality, rigorous education for our students and providing the support our families need.
Our school community includes amazing families. There are different opinions, and various needs, when it comes to deciding what works best for our students in terms of returning to school in the fall. We know this August will not be a one size fits all scenario and are planning accordingly. Please know we will follow the requirements set forth within the Governor’s plan and will be making decisions at the local level on the recommendations within the plan.
At this time, under Phase 4, we are preparing for a Face to Face instructional model with our students learning within our classrooms. Our students have been away too long and we must do everything in our power to get them in front of our caring and supportive staff, where there are many opportunities for learning.
Our Phase 4 (and Phase 5) Face to Face plan will include a normal five days a week schedule, and a normal school day, while addressing both the academic and social/emotional needs of our students and our families. The details of the guidelines that must be followed will be communicated at a later time (Please click here for a short summary). We are working with our various team members, along with our state and local officials, to develop a plan that will be sent to the state for approval. We will be updating you and asking for information along the way.
We know that if we are in Phase 4 or 5 and return to Face to Face instruction, we may have families wanting to choose a virtual option for their child. Our virtual instructional model will look much different than the virtual experience we provided at the end of last school year. The virtual option will be available for students grades Y5-12 and will have accountability measures, including attendance (online) and grading.
To help us plan for the fall, if you are considering the virtual option, please complete this survey. This is NOT a commitment to the virtual model but rather a way for us to understand the approximate number of students that may be learning remotely.
I will be sending out more communication in the near future that will include instructions on how to officially register for the FAPS virtual instructional model by August 6, 2020.
As always, thank you for your support and commitment to Fenton Area Public Schools. I am looking forward to working with our families to make this year a positive year for all of us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Adam Hartley
