What's New In C2
November 13 - December 1
We are wrapping up some nonfiction after having learned about various nonfiction text features and why they are useful to us when reading nonfiction books.
RI 2.5 - I can understand and use all the helpful parts of nonfiction books to find important facts and details quickly.
RI.2.10 I can read and understand second grade nonfiction by myself.
For the next two weeks leading up to Winter break, we will do an author study on Jan Brett using the fictional literature standard:
RL.2.7 I can use what I learn from pictures and words to show that I understand the characters, setting and events of a story.
We will read several of her stories and dissect how she (as both an author and illustrator) uses her vivid details and illustrations to help the readers understand the overall plot of the story.
We are also beginning to work on cursive writing (in most C2 classes). You can assist your child with this by helping them practice their lowercase letters at home!
We are currently deep into a unit on addition and subtraction! Depending on your lead learner, you may be doing addition and subtraction at the same time, or working on addition first, then subtraction.
2.NBT.5: I can add and subtract two-digit numbers.
2.NBT.6: I can add up to four 2-digit numbers.
2.NBT.B.7 I can use strategies to add numbers within 1000 and know when to regroup.
2.NBT.B.7 I can use strategies to subtract numbers within 1000 and know when to borrow.

We enjoyed our guest speaker this week - Nurse Hussey, a labor and delivery nurse!
We worked with partners to practice our mental math with a fun twist! One must answer adding by 10s and 100s and subtracting by 10s and 100s to continue on in the game.
Let's find flowers while we're learning about flower facts!
What is nonfiction? How does text features look in the books? What's the purpose of all the different text features in a nonfiction text? We've come a long way to learn about them!
