WEEKLY LITURGICAL READINGS AND REFLECTIONS

Third Sunday of Easter

Sacred Scripture JN 21:15

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

Message of Mercy

Do We Welcome Sinners?

The Lord wants us to belong to a Church that knows how to open her arms and welcome everyone, that is not a house for the few, but a house for everyone, where all can be renewed, transformed, sanctified by his love, the strongest and the weakest, sinners, the indifferent, those who feel discouraged or lost…

Are we a Church that calls and welcomes sinners with open arms, that gives courage and hope, or are we a Church closed in on herself? Are we a Church where the love of God dwells, where one cares for the other, where one prays for the others?

— General Audience, October 2, 2013

Reflection

Make a practical resolution to answer the call to be a more welcoming and merciful Church.

St. Gabriel excited to announce expansion of student safety with School Dismissal System, PIKMYKID!

As we continually search for ways to improve safety for our students during the busy and hectic times of dismissal, we came across a unique program called PicMyKid (picmykid.com) After investigating and discussing this program with our Parent Staff Dismissal Committee, we found that PIkMyKid successfully makes use of advancing technology in an app format that will allow parents and staff to closely guide, monitor and communicate the wear-abouts of students' dismissal travels and plans through their smart phones and computers.

PikMykid is Smarter:

  • Allows parents to manage the dismissal of children from their phone
  • Gives administrators a real-time dismissal tracking interface

PikMyKid is Safer

  • Leverages digital handshake technology to match the right kids to the right cars or buses
  • Notifies parents instantly of dismissal status, delays, and emergencies

STAY TUNED AS WE TAKE THE STEPS TO LAUNCH THIS PROGRAM FOR OUR CLOSING WEEKS OF SCHOOL. AS WE PREPARE TO IMPLEMENT THIS PROGRAM WE WILL SET UP, TRAIN, AND PRACTICE, AND LET EVERYONE KNOW SHORTLY WHEN WE ARE READY TO ROLL IT OUT!

GR 4 Design Challenge: EGG DROP

Grade 4 Students Learn Engineering, Science, Art, English and Math while using critical thinking and problem solving!

Three weeks ago, Grade 4 began to excitedly dig into their engineering chapter in Science through engaging and interactive projects, designs, and challenges!

Students were presented with a problem: They needed to create something out of recycled materials available within their classroom's Maker Space, that would allow an egg to stay whole when being dropped from an undisclosed height. It was just told to them, it is very high!

Students had to first draw a design, and then write about why they thought their design would be able to protect the egg. They then were able to start creating their project and making note of any changes or problems along the way. They also tested their design through different trials with other materials before their final drop with the egg in place.

The morning of the official drop students had fifteen minutes to put their egg in place and make any final changes.

Together as a whole 4th grade, students gathered in the MPR, and Mr. Tim dropped each project by class. They were so excited! There were A LOT of eggs that survived the fall! Students then had to reflect on why their design worked so well, or on changes they would make to improve.

Overall, it was a successful learning experience in which students authentically learned critical thinking, the design process, collaboration! Onward not to the next new chapter of physical and chemical changes, and from this engaging project learn what kind of change it was when the egg broke.

PS. The project even made the News Herald!
