Mentoring mismatch
*Article published on Nature
"Most trainees need several different mentors to serve as role models and to advise them on scientific and career questions..."
"Although advisers can't be all things to their trainees, yours may well give you career advice — but you'll need to ask.... postdocs should not feel like they are under their adviser's control..." "You already have your degree, no one can take it away. This training is for your future and you are in control" Read more.
Deadline: June 8 | New Online Course | Wiley Publishers: Wiley Research Academy
The Wiley Researcher Academy (WRA; www.wileyresearcheracademy.com) is a self-paced, online training course that covers all aspects of the research publishing process, including:
- best practices for scientific writing
- identifying appropriate funders and how to apply for funding
- how to select an appropriate journal
- how to deal most effectively with editors and reviewers
- how to promote your article once it’s published
…as well as providing clear descriptions of open access, illegitimate/predatory journals, managing research data, scientific and publishing ethics, and more.
The goal of the WRA is to help researchers write higher quality manuscripts and confidently navigate the publication process to allow faster publication, thus more rapidly advancing their careers and increasing the research output of their institutions.
Gwen P. Taylor, PhD, Business Development Manager at Wiley Researcher Academy, invites all Rutgers postdocs to in a trial of a new online course developed to teach early-career researchers about successfully navigating all the steps involved in publishing their research. Postdocs, especially international postdocs, are also a major part of the primary user group expected to benefit most from this kind of training.
The trial will start June 11 and last for 2 weeks. In exchange for spending a bit of time in the course and providing feedback via an online form, Gwen would be happy to offer a $25 Starbucks or Amazon gift card. Participants can also earn credentials for completing sections of the course that they can list on their LinkedIn profiles.
Any postdocs or graduate students who are interested in participating should send an email to Gwen (gtaylor@wiley.com) with their name, email, title and department by June 8.
If these postdocs/students (and their PIs) deem the course to be a useful resource that will help them more efficiently publish their research findings, then Gwen will work with the librarians, Deans and others to determine whether/how to make it available to all researchers at Rutgers.
