The Tizard Mission

A Man and His Team, Sent to Bring Britain Power to Fight.

Summary of Event

In World War II, Great Britain was losing against Germany. They needed more support. They went to their ally, America, who would manufacture Britain's top secret and best inventions to help them out, in exchange for the building and supplying of weapons.

Due to most of America's factories being on the coast, it was easy to ship the documents, manufacture, and ship the inventions back to Britain. These inventions would change the course of the war for Britain. The leader of the mission, Sir Henry Tizzard, and his team left Britain on a disguised ocean liner to deliver these blueprints and documents in secret in 1940.


It was 1940, and Britain was losing their fight against Germany's expanding empire. Nazis swallowed all ground around Britain, and bombs fell from the sky in the Battle of Britain. Germany was getting closer and closer to conquering Britain. Everyone was getting anxious as to what would come, forcing Britain's government to do something.

The Prime Minister of Britain, Winston Churchill, sent Britain's best engineers and scientists, Sir Henry Tizard and his team, on a quest that would bring in a win for Britain in the tough war.

Tizard and his team left Britain on a disguised ocean liner on August 14, 1940. The boat contained a box filled with many documents and blueprints. These documents and blueprints contained inventions that would forever change the outcome of the war, and the future of aircraft. It was a risky mission, as there was war almost everywhere. After a few days, they arrived on the Atlantic coast of America, where they presented the documents to the US Government, who later deemed production on what would become the turn of events in the war. Factories worked 24/7 to crank out inventions such as the Supercharger, Gyroscopic gun sights, and the Cavity Magnetron.

These inventions would make British aircraft technology better than anyone else's. Superchargers allowed aircraft to gain more power at given altitudes. Gyroscopic gun sights would allow fighters to see a farther distance on targets, creating a more precise shot. The Cavity Magnetron allowed the use of airborne radar. Airborne radar basically made finding the location of another piece of aircraft or an enemy submarine much easier than before. This invention is even used today in airports today, thus making this a very extremely useful thing to have in WWII.

After the mass production, the items were shipped back to Britain, and Europe was able to successfully destroy the threat Germany had against Britain, and Europe.

  • The Bell Telephone Company was in charge of producing the Magnetrons Approximately One Million Magnetrons were created through the duration of the war.
