NEWS & NOTES
Our vision should be known by all. In breaking this down, our learning environment will be:
- Positive- set the tone in our classrooms by building relationships and reinforcing positive behavior
- Engaging- instruction will be interactive and driven by student needs. This means intentional planning through posted I CAN statements aligned to daily lessons.
- Rigorous- Our instruction needs to be challenging and aligned to standards. Deconstructing standards into skills and teaching how to apply the skills is the end game. Critical thinkers are the desired outcome.
Please take some well deserved time off during this coming break!!! You all have worked extremely hard this quarter and it shows in the climate and instructional focus of our building. Rest and recharge....and take time for YOU! When we return, we will be hitting our most crucial time of the year- ISTEP Part II in the upper grades, and preparation for EOY TRC/DIBELS in the primary grades. Your students will need everything you have to get prepared!!!!
The building will be closed the first week of Spring Break (March 20-24) for heavy cleaning. Please make sure your rooms are organized prior to this happening. I have tasked our custodial team with a complete scrub down so we are nice and shiny when we return. Take down any old student work samples, as the expectation will be for fresh ones to be posted after we return. Data walls should be updated and reflect current levels of performance.
Our Instructional Focus for our return from Spring Break will be as follows:
K-2: Guided Reading, particularly the teacher table. Emphasis will be on students spending most of their time in text, practicing fluency and answering comprehension questions. We must push our little Cardinals to grow in their reading skills to better prepare them for the upper grades!!! ELA PLC's will focus on our TRC data and how we are growing students day by day. Some resources from the Jan Richardson website are below in the DIY section below.
3-6: ISTEP Part II prep. This section accounts for close t0 70% of our students total score. Emphasis on them preparing to answer multiple choice questions with multiple answers or technology enhanced items. How are we going to re-mediate and enrich our critical standards?? PLC's will focus on data and our planning for this instruction.
The first week back from break should be spent on re-establishing rules, procedures, and expectations throughout the instructional day. Remember, they will have not been with us for 16 consecutive days. This is typically a time of movement in our student population, as students are moving out or coming in. This can cause a lot of stress in our students, which manifests itself in different ways. Please check out the DIY section below for some tips on how to support our students feeling these stressors.
This is a great time to re-establish what was working with your classroom management system. Reflect- what needs to be tweaked to ensure our classroom environment matches our vision of a positive learning environment? New Cardinal Cash (yellow) will be in your boxes and ready to go when we return. Make sure to flood students with it and make sure we pay attention to the positive more than the negative. We get the behaviors we pay the most attention to!!
