The 4th quarter Media Center Messenger is printed and in the mail. Look for it in the coming seven to ten days! Thanks everyone who made contributions to represent the Regional Network.

SDE Annual Survey

The SDE annual survey for school libraries is out and ready to be completed. Be sure to get your school, district, and region counted. SC Statewide School Library Survey is now open! This year, the SC Statewide School Library Survey will run from May 1st through September 15th, 2013. The official survey link is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NBSZ6J7
You can read more about the survey and print out a copy of the questions (in PDF or Word) to get a jump start on the survey at: http://www.kershaw.k12.sc.us/district/library/survey/
(If you have any questions about the survey, please feel free to email Julie Putman at julie.putnam@kcsdschools.net.)

Further SCASL Snapshot Day on Hold

With the SDE Annual Survey upon us, and a potential Keith Curry Lance Study coming (SCASL and others are researching the possibility) the board decided to sideline any more attempts to do a SCASL Snapshot Day. This may return later, but not anytime in the near future. A special thanks to those who participated in the three attempts SCASL had previously. The Advocacy Committee is working with the data now and hopes to release findings later this year.

SCASL Membership

SCASL Membership runs from July 1-June 30 annually. Remember to renew your SCASL Membership. We are only as strong together as a group!

  • Currently there are 830ish members representing the 2012-2013 year

  • As of this week, there are 156 paid members for the 2013-2014 school year. Let’s encourage folks to renew their dues!!!

REMINDER: ALL SCASL Contacts MUST be paid SCASL members.

  • Visit http://scasl.net/member-options/ to download forms to renew membership

Conference Notes:

SCASL had a slight increase over the last two years for conference attendance. Overall though, attendance is still down, but low attendance seems to correlate with the downturn of the economy and schools cutting budgets (particularly library budgets) In the upcoming Media Center Messenger, Anne Lemieux, President Elect, offers a summary of this year’s conference.

Heather Loy, current SCASL President, recently met in Charlotte and worked with our region’s Affiliate Assembly for AASL.

Region IV Concern: The AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner Lesson Plan Database needs to be searchable by the Common Core standards and needs to have more lesson plans! The SCASL Summer Institute will be a place to work on lesson plans that can be added to the AASL Lesson Plan database. Those who are signed up are being asked to bring lesson plans and their own laptops! (Don’t forget to sign up!)

SC State Read-In

The Annual Read-in was significantly more organized this year with a fine program. There were roughly 1800 attendees (students, teachers, librarians, and other related people) in attendance to provide a strong statement about reading and the role of librarians in our k-12 schools.
