21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
I hope everyone set their clocks ahead an hour ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Basketball
The draw paired Hobart with Porter County neighbor Portage in a rematch from early December ... a 46-25 Indians victory. The Brickies got on the board first on a FT by senior guard Tyler Schultz to take a 1-0 lead, but Portage came back and outscored our boys 16-9 over the next 7 minutes. A short jumper that just beat the horn put the Indians up 18-10 after 1 quarter of play.
The 2nd frame was a BATTLE ... Schultz found NOTHING BUT THE BOTTOM OF THE NET to cut the Portage lead to 3 at 20-17, but back-to-back scores put the Indians up 7 at 24-17. The two teams basically traded baskets the rest of the way and Hobart trailed only 28-22 at the break.
Portage outscored the Brickies 12-6 in the 3rd period to extend their lead to double figures at 40-28 going into the last quarter. Our boys FOUGHT HARD all game, but never could quite find the same rhythm on either end that we'd played with over the 4-game win streak to close out the regular season. Ultimately, we were never out of it, but never really threatened to take control either and lost a tough one 55-45.
Schultz scored a season-high 21 points to go along with 4 rebounds. Sophomore Miki Djankovich also reached double-figures in the scoring column with 10. Senior Sean UNNNNDERDAHL tied Schultz for the team-high in rebounds with 4, and classmate Caleb Banjoff closed out his career with 6 points against a Portage team that geared it's defensive scheme to limit his opportunities.
It was a disappointing end ... they all are when you lace them up for the last time. Nothing can take away the PRIDE these kids played with or all they accomplished - Holiday Tournament CHAMPIONS, 12 wins, beat Merrillville for the 1st time since 2004. They say it's the journey that counts, not the destination ... I would have to agree. This team STAYED THE COURSE and KEPT PLAYING ... NEVER GIVING UP until the final buzzer sounded. That's how they were all season. These boys represented the PURPLE & GOLD so well ALL YEAR with their EFFORT and ATTITUDE ... CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Brown, his staff, and the entire team on such a GREAT year! THANK YOU one more time to our seniors ... Tyler Schultz, Caleb Banjoff, Sean & Trevor UNNNDERDAHL ... for everything you gave for this team and this town.

No team score was kept as this was simply an opportunity for athletes to qualify for the Hoosier State Relays Finals in Bloomington on March 28th ... but what a start for our boys and girls tracksters!
No official results were available from the "Throwers Classic" over at Portage, but after speaking with Coach Balash & Coach Wesley Saturday morning, the Brickies represented extremely well!
Keep up the good WORK WORK WORK!

SPRING SPORTS ARE HERE!
Hopefully we've seen just about the last of the bitter cold and we can join in as the Beatles sing, "Here comes the sun, doo doo doo doo, here comes the sun and I say, it's alright"
GOOD LUCK to our spring sports as they get started on what will undoubtedly be an exciting few months!
