Good News! AOC Recognized as a 2021 California Distinguished School!

We are pleased to share some good news with our families! Please help us in celebrating the recognition of the Academy of the Canyons being recognized as a 2021 California Distinguished School!

Presented by the California Department of Education (CDE) and sponsored by California Casualty, the 2021 California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes California schools that have made exceptional gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education for all students. In 2021, California is using a multiple measure accountability system to identify eligible schools based on their performance and progress on the state indicators as specified on the California School Dashboard (Dashboard). Information about the Dashboard is available on the CDE California School Dashboard and System of Support web page at

We will celebrate our California Distinguished Schools at a virtual awards ceremony in the near future.

You can view the news release regarding this announcement on the CDE News Releases Year 2021 web page at

Additional information is available on the CDE Distinguished Schools Program web page at

What is i-Ready?

This year, the California Department of Education is not requiring our school district to administer the California Assessment for Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Instead, our school district is administering the i-ready exam to students in grades 7-11. Here is a parent link with more information about this assessment. Click here. Our teachers will administer the exam during freshman seminar and advisory classes. Students can take it online or in person. The exam will provide us with valuable information to inform us of our students' academic strengths and areas for growth in both subject areas of mathematics and English. If you have any questions about testing, please reach out to our school.

Update on Graduation, Rehearsals and Senior Sunrise

Our Seniors are set to graduate on Saturday, June 5th at 9:00am at COC in the stadium! We will be sending out a survey next week to allow families to reserve more tickets.

Rehearsals will be held on Friday, June 4th and will not interfere with our students graduating from COC with their AA degrees. More information to come.

This Friday, May 7th, our seniors are invited to join us for the Senior Sunrise on our Future event. Students are expected to arrive between 5:30 a.m. and 5:45 a.m. Thank you to Roots who will be providing a pre-packaged breakfast that students will receive on their way out of the parking lot. Because the event is being held at COC, students have to remain in their cars. We look forward to seeing our students!

Virtual Senior Awards on May 20th at 6:00pm

A virtual Senior Awards show will be hosted on zoom on May 20th at 6:00pm. Student award winners and their parents will receive a special invitation via email later this week.

Academy of the Canyons

Located on the campus of College of the Canyons, AOC is proud to be the middle college high school in the William S. Hart Union High School District serving students 9th-12th grades in the Santa Clarita Valley. Students have the opportunity to earn between 24 and 44 transferable college units, prior to receiving their high school diplomas. Upon graduation, the majority of Academy students pursue their post high school education by continuing at COC and completing their college transfer requirements in only one year after high school. Other AOC students go directly into a four-year university, bringing their community college units with them and placing themselves well into their freshman and sophomore years at the college level. While attending AOC as a high school student, community college tuition is waived for established California residents.
