Make A Difference Day
Our Un-Fundraiser Is Underway
In response to parent feedback requesting fewer fundraising events throughout the year, the PTA is currently sponsoring an “un-fundraiser”. To date, we have received approximately $5,000. It is important to note this is in comparison to our annual Wildcat Walk which typically brought in an average of $25,000 a year as a single event.
Please consider donating and sharing with family and friends. Doing so will assist the PTA to reach their $30,000 goal in order to continue offering family togetherness events, ongoing playground improvement efforts, monetary contributions to offset field trip expenses, student t-shirts, assemblies, and more! Many, many thanks in advance! Visit our PTA website for more information.
Meet Kind Kevin!
Math
In Everyday Math, the students will learn more about even numbers and equal addends. We will also begin looking at "Name Collection Boxes" which is a place to write different names for the same number. The children will practice addition and subtraction number models by playing a game called, "Name That Number". Finally, we will begin solving frames-and-arrows problems.
Next week, we will take our Unit 2 assessment on Tuesday, 10/22 and Wednesday, 10/23.
Reading
In Reader's Workshop, we our continuing our first unit - Second-Grade Reading Growth Spurt. This week, readers will learn that words aren't always as easy as they seem. We will explore different strategies for figuring out brand new words. We will end this week by checking ourselves and our reading. Students will learn that we shouldn't wait for someone else to catch our mistakes, but instead, check themselves as soon as something doesn't seem right.
Science
3 ... 2 ... 1 ... Blast Off!!!
This week we are beginning our Solar System unit. The students will have the opportunity to share what they think they already know about the Solar System and what they are wondering. We will practice the order of the planets, and then begin learning about the Sun and our first planet, Mercury.
Save the Date: Second Grade families are invited to attend our annual Space Night on Friday evening, November 15th. Stay tuned for more information coming soon!
Writing
In Writer’s Workshop, we will continue writing our small moment pieces. This week students will learn that writer's don't just revise parts of their writing, but revise the way their writing sounds. We will look at different mentor texts for word choice. The children will reread their writing while editing. Finally, the students will learn that they can find help on their writing from any mentor text.
Word Study
A Word Study test will be given on Friday. Please sign and return all tests after reviewing them with your child.
