Cold and Flu
As we enter Cold/Flu/Stomach Virus season, it is a great time to remind everyone that there
are several common sense things that we can do to help prevent the spread of illness both
at school and at home.
- Eat right and get plenty of rest.
- Practice good hand hygiene by washing hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing or coming into contact with someone who could be sick. Alcohol based hand sanitizers may also be effective, although not as much as washing with soap and water.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not your hand.
- Contain your germs by not touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Keep your child at home when sick, until symptoms cease.
That last one is really important! While excellent school attendance is very important, sending kids to school when they are sick does not help. Please know that if you send your child to school and illness symptoms are present or develop during the day, we will ask that you pick your child up, particularly if he or she has a fever, is vomiting, has a frequent harsh cough, or has a very red throat and/or a rash.
Please take the time in the morning to observe your child to be sure they are feeling well before sending them to school. We will be very strict with our exclusion policy during virus season to help protect your children, our students and our staff. When your child is sick, we also ask that you notify the school and let us know what symptoms your child is experiencing so we can watch for any patterns in the illness.
Guidelines for returning to school after illness:
- Fever less than 100 degrees- without the use of fever reducing medication such as Tylenol/Motrin/etc.
- No vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours.
- If prescribed antibiotics, return to school only after the student has been taking the antibiotic for 24 hours.
- Keep student home for severe sore throat, excessive cough producing phlegm, severe headache, earache, stomachache, or any illness where the student is unable to eat/drink/sleep or otherwise carry out their normal school activities without pain or discomfort.

Alabama High School Athletics Association Bylaw Of The Week
AHSAA BYLAW OF THE WEEK GRADES 7-12
Scenario: Tim is an 8th grade student-athlete who participates on his school’s junior high baseball team. He is a really good player and has a nice future ahead of him. Due to a rash of injuries during the season to a several varsity players, the head coach is considering moving Tim up to the varsity. Question: Since the school has a junior high baseball team, can Tim be moved up to the varsity?
On Page 72-73 of the 2018-19 AHSAA Handbook: Junior High/Middle School – Combination Programs:
Participation is permitted under the following programs if there is an agreement between the principals of the middle/junior high and the high schools involved:
3. Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Graders with High School: Seventh, eighth and ninth graders at a junior high (grades 7-9) or middle school (grades 7-8) may participate in any level of competition (varsity, junior varsity, etc.) at the high school for which they are zoned if all other requirements are met.
Note: An eighth grader that is “ineligible by age” to participate in middle school athletics may participate in any level of athletic competition (varsity, junior varsity, etc.) at the high school for which he/she is zoned. This should be indicated in C2C.
Also, on page 48 of the AHSAA Handbook, you may find Rule III. Contests. Sections 13. Contest/Tournament Limitations:
Limitations are established for the number of contests and tournaments a school may play in each sport, and the first practice and contest dates are set for each sport. (See Sports Calendar on page 44.)
A student may participate in the number of contests his/her team is permitted to play in that sport. If a student participates on more than one level of competition in the same sport during the same season, the maximum number of contests that the student may participate in is the number of contests his/her highest-level team is permitted to play. (Ex.: A student playing a combination of junior varsity and varsity basketball games may participate in a maximum of 20 games, the number a varsity high school team can play.) The only exception is in football where a student may play a total of 18 games
Interpretation: If the junior high team is within a unit school or a feeder school to the high school, Tim may be moved up to the varsity team for the high school. However, including the junior high games he has already participated in, he cannot exceed the maximum number of games at the highest level. (Baseball- 1A-6A is 28/ 7A is 32).
Proactive Measures: The principal is responsible for the eligibility of all student-athletes. The high school principal and middle school principal should work closely together to ensure that the entire athletic program, grades 7-12, is functioning as one cohesive unit. In addition, the coaches of both levels should communicate to make sure Tim does not exceed the number of contests allowed
