General News! Week of January 17-20th
Terrific Tuesday To You!
We hope you enjoyed your 3 day weekend, because that is our last holiday we we have until spring break, and that is 9 1/2 away! (Mrs. McKinney did the math!)
With that in mind, it is important to remember that our grading policy, and allowances. for missing assignments is being more strictly enforced this semester. Students who have missing/ incomplete assignments can make them up 3 different ways: before school (6:45-7:15 am) during RRAP time on Wednesdays, or get a signed permission slip for after school camp on Thursdays. If this is not completed within 3 days of the assignments due date, or other arrangements with a teacher have been made, a "0" will remain as the grade for that assignment.
Just a quick reminder that permission slips for our after school camps were sent home last week. Thank you to those of you that made sure that they were signed and returned. We had a good group stay last week. If your child received one of these forms and has not yet returned it, please let us know your intentions by Wednesday...if your child will not be joining the group they were invited to, we would like to offer that space to another student. Thanks!
I have also attached a brief note from Dr. McManigal :
Dear Parents,
Please complete the SMMS annual Title I school survey to help us with continuous improvement as well as planning parental involvement activities. Thank you for continued support of our school.
The survey can be found at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ParSur-HS-17.
Educationally yours,
Angela B. McManigal

Social Studies- Mr. Salser
This week the students will be moving into the New South period where we will focus on the industrial revolution in Georgia, the civil rights struggle from 1875-1914, and the important people involved with both the industrial revolution and civil rights movement in Georgia.
This week we will focus on Alonzo Herndon, W.E.B. Dubose, John and Lugenia Burns-Hope, and Henry Grady.
Science- Mrs. Allen
This week in Science, we will finish covering the electromagnetic spectrum and start talking more about light waves, mirrors, and lenses. Our mastery assessment is coming up next Wednesday, so please help me to ensure that every student is practicing with MobyMax and the Kahoot I created for them. Here is a link to the Kahoot: https://play.kahoot.it/#/?quizId=11735f3f-243b-4b68-ad2e-46db7cd0e2a4 . Students can access MobyMax through clever.com by signing in with their school gmail account. Let’s have another great week, and get prepared to show what we’ve been learning! J
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Math - We will continue to work on functions and representations of functions. Wednesday the students will be able to choose which task they would like to complete to show that they understand functions. Thursday the students will take a quiz on functions and Friday we will begin learning about the constant rate of change and how to write equations from tables. The students will have homework every night except Tuesday night.
Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
In language arts:
This week we will continue working on argumentative essays. Students have been presented with a number of topics, which we are reading, and then being asked to defend one side of the argument. They are continuing to identify and create a "thesis statement", selecting textual evidence that will support our claim/argument, as well as evidence that supports the counterargument, and wrapping it all up with a sound rebuttal.
Students will take their 3rd practice Assesslet Writing test next week (date is currently being adjusted)This test will be timed and is set up in a similar manner to the EOG. The focus of this test will be Persuasive/Argumentative. It is important that our students are able to properly compose any style of writing that they are presented with as a prompt, as well as complete their piece in a limited amount of time. This will be much of our focus during this quarter.
FYI...Very few students completed their first week of their new homework reading assignment for this quarter. If any attempt was made on this, a check mark was placed in Power School as a temporary marker...)s indicate students that made no attempt on this assignment. Not only is this practice a required assignment, but it should help them improve their reading skills and lexile levels with regular practice. The format for NewsELA.com is very similar to our Tween Tribune readings. Students are being asked to complete 3 readings each week, 2 of these will be selected by me, and the 3rd is their own choice. One of the articles that I have assigned to them will also be one that they are asked to respond to in writing.
Independent choice readings...Book 1 is due by this Friday, Jan. 20th. Students will be responsible for 4 independent books this quarter, so they will only have 2 weeks for each book if they did not take advantage of completing one over winter break. It is totally doable, but it requires them to stay on track.
Our SMMS Spelling Bee was postponed last Friday, January 13th, due to illness. This has been rescheduled for this Friday, Jan. 20th. The winner of our school contest will move onto the County Spelling Bee. Good Luck to all of our Super Spellers!
