Cedar Grove Friday Flash
September 24, 2021
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
Thank you to all of our parents who attended our virtual Back-to-School Night last night! Your child's teacher will be sending you information about how to access the recording and slide deck in case you were not able to attend.
The George B. Thomas. Sr. Learning Academy, Inc. - Saturday School will begin virtual classes on Saturday, September 25th. Online registration started on September 1st, but there is space for additional students.
Classes will be offered in reading (Benchmark) and math (Eureka) for grades Pre-K through 5 from 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. through May of 2022. There will also be a special center for our English Language Learner students and their families. Saturday School programming will include weekly Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, recreational activities and academic acceleration with opportunities for enrichment. In addition, CODING sessions will be offered throughout the school year for an additional fee.
Program fees are $85.00 for the entire school year ($40 for FARMS students) and weekly attendance is strongly encouraged to maximize the learning for students. Registration can be found at www.saturdayschool.org. Additional information may also be found on our school website by clicking this Saturday School link.
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is committed to the health, safety, and welfare of all students. Bullying and harassment will not be tolerated, so if your child shares concerns of this occurring at school, please contact Mrs. Erin Spoales, our school counselor and student wellness liaison. For more information, please click this link on Ways to Report Bullying, Child Abuse and Neglect.
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDA) is requiring all schools to conduct early Fall state assessments, known as the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP), in English Language Arts and Math. These assessments are typically administered to students in grades 3-5 in the Spring; however, due to COVID and the postponement of these assessments last year, students will take the assessments for the grade in which they were enrolled last Spring; therefore, students in 3rd grade will not take the MCAP assessments. Students currently in 4th and 5th grades will take the English Language Arts assessments on October 4th and 5th and the Math assessments will take place on October 6th. All assessments will be administered in the mornings. Later in the spring, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will take the MCAP assessments for the current school year. For more information, MSDE has provided school districts with an MCAP Early Fall informational document, both in English and Spanish.
Have a wonderful weekend!

From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Media Specialist
Welcome back everyone! I am so grateful that we can once again allow parent volunteers in the building because our media center needs you! In order to maintain our open circulation program while I'm teaching, you become a key ingredient to keeping our circulation open. Please consider helping our kids to continue to check out books! If you have helped in this way before, you know how meaningful this volunteer position is. If you haven't, we will train you (you get to use a scanner!) and it won't take you long to figure out how much fun it is to interact with our students in this way. Feel free to email me if you're interested, or just sign up here! Thank you so much for your consideration!
There's always so much information in my September Media Monthly, so please make sure you bookmark it and check it often.
