Reading
By: Talia & Natalie
This week in Reading we started a new read aloud book called Dyamonde Daniel. It is about a girl named Dyamonde who is new in town. Her parents are divorced so she lives in an apartment with only her mom. At school a new kid comes in and his name is Free, Dyamonde tries to be nice but he just grunts and stomps away. We were comparing Dyamonde to Opal from Because of Winn-Dixie. We are discussing with our reading partners their similarities and differences. We are also talking about what problems they face and how they react to them. For example, Dyamonde Daniel tries to be nice to Free, and Opal tries to be nice to the Dewberry Boys. The Dewberry Boys are two boys named Stevie and Dunlap who are mean to Opal. And that is one way the Opal and Dyamonde are similar. As you can see we are doing a lot with our new book. But we are still working on our book club books.
Our book clubs are little groups among the class that read the same book and then meet up and talk about what they read. There are 4 different groups in the class. One group reads Ginger Pye, another group reads Janitor’s Boy, The third group reads The Map Trap, the fourth group reads Beezus and Ramona. We all love our books! Every time we finish a chapter we have to fill out our Stop + Jots. Our Stop + Jots are things that we fill out to remember what happened in each chapter. If you don’t finish all of your reading and Stop + Jots in time you have to finish it at home. You always have to be done everything in time for the meeting the next day. As you can see this week in reading was very fun but busy. Did you have as much work as us this week? Well, we had fun doing it.
Social Studies
By AJ and Liam
This week we started a new topic in social studies. We are so excited to tell you all about it. One thing we did in Social Studies was landforms. Three landforms are deserts oceans and Islands. We started a project where we had to select 8 landforms to label and draw them on a piece of paper. Our favorite is ocean. There are 10 landforms that we learned in all. The tallest landform in mountains. The valleys are the shortest land form. Islands are surrounded by water. We can't wait to tell you more as we learn more!

Writing
By Chris & John William
Hi everyone!!! :) This week in writing, it sounded like ”______________ .” I know quiet right? That’s because we were typing on chromebooks. In writing, we wrote our persuasive speeches. For example, the authors of this smore (Chris & John William) are close to finishing there speeches. Chris is writing about how a classmate is a noteworthy person. John William is writing about why SOME police dogs should not be in the police for example the pound just takes dogs for police and you can’t get them back!!! :( After they finish they’re going to write about people should get rid of the pound for their second topic. Anyway it took a looooong time and a lot of hard work before we had the opportunity type the stories. I would say 12 out of 20 students finished their stories. These stories are apart of our school because if we send them to the school then we may be able to change the school in a good way. We already impressed Mr. Bissinger so we now get extra recess during PARCC week (next week we start PARCC). Now I think it may be time to wrap it up. We enjoyed our week in writing a lot but I think we're more excited for the weekend!!! We hope you and your family have a nice weekend!!

Math
By Aaniya & Lyla
This is reporter Lyla Levine and Aaniya Malik, and this week in math we are learning about measuring water in millimeters and liters. I thought it was science once I saw it. But it wasn't. I was surprised. We experimented with water, it was very messy and I still couldn't believe it was math. We also solved problems with measurement and all sorts of fun stuff. Did you do this stuff when you're a kid in math? If you did, it's really fun. For example, we had to measure the water in the measuring cups and then see how much the water moved when the rock dropped into the water. Water is fun to work with.
We also have been doing some measurements with fractions. It got a little fuzzy when we learned fractions. We were measuring to the nearest quarter inch. It was a little simpler since we had already learned it but we were reviewing it again so we won't lose our memory of it. When we are measuring to the nearest ¼ it was a little hard because the spaces are so small. But we using our knowledge of fractions to help. Working with rulers is fun. We worked with rulers a lot that day.
Reading
By Lawrence & Angela
This week in reading was great …
We found out the theme of the story “Because of Winn-Dixie.” We sorted the story parts of “Because of Winn-Dixie” into setting, problem, character traits and feelings, and theme. We learned about “story mountain” which sounds like a fairy tale but it isn’t. We learned how the problems build up, the climax, and the resolution. That is a story mountain. Which is cool. We made book clubs and each group chooses a book to read. We would discuss what happened and make our plan for what to read.
That's it for this week.

Writing
By Cole & Brady
This week in writing couldn’t have been any better. It was not only great but it was awesome. In writing we had lots of fun. We continued our opinion writing and all of us wrote about our opinions. What seemed like a minute was actually a whole week of writing our opinions down on paper about people who were noteworthy or we wrote about a problem about something in our school, town, state, or our world. But we don’t want to give it all away in this paragraph so let’s get started with the next.
We continued to work on adding details and examples to our writing. We added vignettes, more reasoning to our writing, and solutions. It was pretty cool!!! But this week, we added something we didn’t already add. We added an introduction, and conclusion. You might be asking what is an Introduction and conclusion. Well an Introduction and conclusion are something that you add at the beginning and end. They introduce the topic and wrap up the topic.
This week was awesome. We all really enjoyed writing this week it was a lot of fun. We all can’t wait for next week!
Social Studies
By Becca & Owen
This is mission control you’re heading in the right direction that is in the western and northern hemisphere in United States of America. We seem to be losing connection------------------------------------------------------------------------.That's what we did in social studies.
We pretended to be astronauts finding the space shuttle’s way back to the landing site. We were in launch position when we listened to the tapes. We had used our packet to learn about the hemispheres and continents. We got a packet it’s called Me On The Map. We wrote what our street is,our number for our house, our planet, our town, our county, our country, our region, our state, our continent and our hemispheres. We also learned about the equator and the Prime Meridian. They separate the hemispheres. We learned about the 5 oceans. They are the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Arctic, the Southern and the Indian ocean.
We just started doing geography but we can't wait to learn more.
