The Newbery Medal Winner and Honor Books
The Newbery award is "given for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature. The book chosen for the Newbery Medal winner was a little surprising. The committee chose, Last Stop on Market Street, by Matt De La Pena. While most Newbery winners are novels, this medal winner is a picture book. Many people were disappointed, I think the book was an excellent choice! It meets all the requirements and is an excellent example of "distinguished" writing! It is also a Caldecott Honor book and it is nominated for the Kentucky Bluegrass award. We do have one copy of this book in the library.

The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
A great historical fiction novel set in WWII. This book is considered a middle grades book, (5th - 8th grade). It also won the Schneider Family Book Award. The Schneider Family book award is give to a book that "embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience." We do have this book in the library.
Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan
Echo is also has elements of historical fiction and music as the story centers around a harmonica. The NY Times says "In, Echo, a harmonica travels across years and over continents and seas to touch the lives of three embattled, music obsessed children and quite possibly save a life."
We do not have a copy of, Echo in our library but we will be purchasing it as soon as possible.
Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson
I don't know much about Roller Girl. I do know that it is a Graphic Novel and Graphic Novels have been a big hit with our students lately!! We do not have this book in our library but I will get it as soon as possible!
