The Wayne-Westland Wrap Up- February 16, 2023
Greetings Wayne-Westland Families,
Each week our Central Office Department has the opportunity to visit schools, classrooms and meet with various teams. It is one of the best parts of our job! Each visit and meeting gives us reasons to feel grateful and to celebrate. Our students continue to grow and learn in their classrooms and with extracurricular activities and events. We have talented and accomplished staff and students. We have a lot to celebrate as we reflect on this year. Thank you for your commitment to our schools. Wayne-Westland Community Schools is an amazing place. It is something I am reminded of nearly every day. We are so proud of our students, staff and community who support us. Thank you for your continued partnership. We hope everyone has a safe and peaceful mid-winter break.
There will be no school from Monday, February 20, through Friday, February 24, 2023. We will see you back on Monday, February 27, 2023.
Sincerely,
John Dignan, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Mice and Go Computer Coding
All elementary students will participate in this introductory computer coding activity as part of their media classes. Mice and Go is an interactive STEM coding game that the media classes at our elementary schools are using to teach students about computer coding. This introduction to computer coding teaches students critical thinking, problem-solving and coding skills.
Students Celebrate 100s Day
The 100th day of school is an exciting milestone for our younger elementary students. It marks the halfway point of the school year but also reinforces students’ understanding and recognition of numbers up to 100. Many of our elementary students participate in special classroom activities on 100s Day.
District wins in RivalZ Week
RivalZ week was a huge success! Thank you to all of our students and staff at John Glenn and Wayne Memorial High School who joined together in for a week of fun activities. The staff from both high school even competed in a dodge ball competition. Students at both schools also hosted a blood drive and raised $2000 for the district's Family Resource Center.
Spelling Bee Winner
The district has a new champion. Eighteen middle school students competed in the 42nd annual Earle Chorbagian Spelling Bee on Feb. 8 at Adams Middle School. Congratulations to Franklin Middle School 6th grader Navaeh Zeeto who won the competition and will compete next in the WXYZ Regional Spelling Bee.

Students Thrive in Esports League
Wayne-Westland Community Schools has added Esports as one of the many opportunities we offer our students. The district has three high school Esports teams: Alpha Rockets, Bravo Rockets and Charlie Rockets. Students compete with other teams from across the country in weekly matches where they engage in critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Similar to other teams, Esports requires sportsmanship and leadership.

Students Recognized for Random Acts of Kindness
Two Wayne-Westland students were recognized at the Feb. 6 Westland City Council meeting as part of a Random Acts of Kindness program.
Brandon Britton of Wayne Memorial High School participates in the district's unified basketball team as a student coach. He has been a consistent presence for the team, and the players look forward to seeing him. Brandon was recognized for his kindness in volunteering his time to this unique program.
Lucas Downey of William D. Ford Career-Technical Center always helps the teaching staff and his fellow classmates. He helped bring down the carts to the lecture hall when his class had to move classrooms for a couple days. Lucas is consistently nominated for student of the week for always going out of his way to be extra helpful in the Autobody classroom.
Congratulations to these fine students and their support system who have shown them the way to compassion.
Students Compete for Best NWEA Scores
There is a friendly rivalry among the three middle schools in the district as they each compete for the greatest gains on the Winter NWEA test. NWEA is an assessment tool used to measure student achievement and growth in math and reading.
Administrators, staff, and students “raised the bar” this year with their challenge videos, sent by each school to the others, as they fight for the title and trophy. Take a look at these short and awesome videos!
