Get an inside view on our year so far!

Greetings Parents and Guardians!

It is hard to believe 4th quarter is already here, but time flies when you're having fun! The boys of Guys Read have been busy with so many activities, visitors, and special events these past months; I wanted to take a moment to share some highlights before the year ends!

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Tori Gammeri

Authors, Laughter, and Treats...Oh My!

Over the course of the last few quarters, the guys have done everything from a symbolic pumpkin smash to lunch with a bestselling author! There have been heavy doses of motivation and too many bouts of laughter to count.

Recently, the guys have been busy reading Sky Raiders, the first book in Brandon Mull's Five Kingdoms series. Mr. Mull visited us in January and autographed copies of the book for the guys! The group then decided it was the perfect book to use as incentive for Ozzie's Reading Club--which we joined this year. Ozzie's Reading Club is a motivational program offered by the Kane County Cougars baseball team. After we finish the novel and write letters to the author, then we will be rewarded with tickets to a baseball game on April 22nd! Details and permission slips for this exciting field trip opportunity will be coming home soon.

In addition, the members of Guys Read have shown impressive growth on MAP tests and put forth their best efforts on PARCC tests! Before taking these important exams, the guys were welcome to visit the library to fuel up on healthy snacks. We always want their best to shine through, so we were happy that many of them took advantage of this opportunity.

We are looking forward to an action-packed 4th quarter to wrap up this year!

About Guys Read at McCracken

Guys Read is a web-based literacy program for boys founded by bestselling author and student advocate Jon Scieszka. The mission is to help young men develop into self-motivated, lifelong readers and to address the prevalent gender gap in national reading scores. The website is a wonderful resource for students, parents and educators alike:

McCracken's local chapter of Guys Read is in its second year and has proven to be a valuable enrichment activity, helping 6th graders build a strong foundation as readers and feel at home in the library and comfortable with the staff. This optional club meets bimonthly during lunch.

Details about our past meetings and upcoming schedule can be found on the McCracken Learning Center's Moodle page.
