Lunch Update & Clarification
It recently came to my attention that there has been some community chatter about the LAF lunch period. I am going to try to address the concerns that came to my attention as best I can in writing.
- "The lines are too long to get a school lunch.": In September, we were not fully staffed in the kitchen. Many LAF staff members stepped up to help but there were still delays in getting the food to the students. I have come to learn that LAF provided over 4000 lunches to our students in the month of September. Since September, we have hired two more staff members to support the LAF demand for lunches. However, the line is not just long because of the number of students ordering. The line is delayed because they are picking and choosing what they want to eat which is not allowed in the free lunch program. For example, if the menu is veggies, rice, and chicken, students will say no to the veggies or rice or chicken. When this happens the lunch staff has to prepare a special tray which takes time and impacts how quickly the line moves. With the free lunch program, they have to take all of the components of the lunch to qualify for the free lunch. If not, they will have to pay for the lunch (not my rules). We have been monitoring how and what the students are ordering over the last two days and the wait time for getting through the line has significantly declined.
- Picnic Lunches: We are trying to go outside and host picnic lunches as much as possible. This gives the students the whole period to eat and play. We have "eating only" time. When the whistle blows they can either finish eating or they can play.
- "There is not enough time to eat.": While the picnic lunches are amazing, we noticed last week, when it rained, that the students forgot how to navigate the cafeteria. The weather has been so nice so they have not been in the cafeteria since the first week of school. Since they have not been in the cafeteria on a consistent basis they are still unfamiliar with the lunchroom routines and proper procedures for the LAF cafeteria. This impacts the time that they have to eat. In order to provide them with a better understanding of the cafeteria procedures, we will be spending more time in the cafeteria so that routines are established and they have time to eat their lunches.
I hope this helps to explain the cafeteria procedures and some of the complaints that may be coming home with your children. It is my hope that with the changes that are mentioned above, you will hear less about the lunchtime challenges. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
