The Weekly Word from CDS FP - October 1-5, 2018
Looking Back
Happy October!
I hope everyone had a fantastic Chuseok break and all have returned fresh and ready for the remainder of term one. It's delightful to hear travel stories accompanied with smiles from the students and teachers alike, and valuable to reflect on how fortunate we are to have those experiences.
This week, we had our regularly scheduled fire drill at school and everything went safely. Students in PreK and K were treated to a tour of the fire truck, a chance to spray the hose, and to meet and talk with Cheongna firefighters. Thank you to Mr. Kang, our Business Director, for organizing the visit.
A big thank you to our Librarian, Ms. Choo for organizing another successful Book Fair. The usual routine for the teachers is to take students to the Book Fair twice. They discuss how to choose books that are both appropriately leveled and of high interest to the student. They make mental or physical lists of what they want, communicate with parents, and return on Friday with the likelihood of purchasing their books. We see a lot of happy faces on the students who have new books, and that is rewarding to see. Thank you, also to the FP PTA for their support of the event with the snack table for students.
MAP test Progress reports were sent home on Friday to students of grades 1-4. Each and every student from those grades should have shared those results with their parents. A note to students and parents - the key area to focus on is individual growth. Please see the links below to further understand how student progress is measured and valued.
Next Friday is the Jogafest, which is also a half-day. Please see the event info below for details.
October is a month full of activities and events. Mr. Baker is facilitating a Halloween Writing Event - see below for details. Spirit Week occurs at the end of the month. It should be a fantastic fall month!

MAP Growth Tests - 12 Common Questions Parents Ask About the MAP Growth Assessment
Jogathon
This year the event is again a combination of our previously annual Fall Fest + Jogathon. Community and Collaboration are the focus for the day. Parents and students will participate in games and challenges throughout the event.
All grades - PK-4 - will be running in the event - parents, too, if they choose!
Here are important points to know about the day:
- the event starts at 8:00 am for students
- the event starts a 8:30 am for parents - information session (optional!)
- it is a half-day; students are dismissed at 12:55pm
Parents can participate in all activities (optional) from 9:15-11:40 (art project, running, relay race…)
- students should wear their team colors (team list is on the link below). Any and all team color is great, but remember that you must run (Jogathon) and be able to play games in these clothes. Layers are great on a day like this where they could be chilly, but will be hot when they are running. If you do not have your team's color - no problem - wear the PE uniform and we will give you a team color pinnie to wear.
- earth, wind, water, fire (green, yellow, blue, red)
- parents are encouraged to wear the team colors, the same color as their child (earth, wind, water, fire)
- parents are encouraged (optional!) to run the Jogathon with their child. Even if you jog/walk just one lap - super. If not running, no problem - cheer on your child as they jog!
- there is ASP - swimming will be from 1:10-2:40pm
- students do not need to bring afternoon snack - remember, it is only a half day!

Halloween Writing Event
Next week, Mr. Baker will be visiting classes to introduce a Halloween writing event. Each student is encouraged to write their own story and submit it to Mr. Baker by October 22. Students may submit stories or nonfiction pieces. The stories can be funny, sweet, and of course, scary! Nonfiction pieces may include, but are not limited to, how-to descriptions (recipes, pumpkin carving) or informative essays on aspects of Halloween (history, animals bios, and more!) The only requirement is that it be related to Halloween! Happy writing!

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring Music and Grade 4. Thank you, Mr. Fejes and Mr. Baker!
Music with Mr. Fejes
This week, 1st graders are learning the difference between beat and rhythm by singing the song “Naughty Kitty Cat”! The students enjoyed playing a circle game and then working together to identify the rhythms of the song.
Grade 4 with Mr. Baker
This week in Grade 4 math, students were collaborating to discuss how to make ballpark estimates. We talked about how we use ballpark estimates in everyday situations. They then used the partial-sums method to check their answers. We talked about practicing multiple strategies to help us build a stronger understanding of math. Great job, class!
