What makes a truly great book?

The CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are the UK's oldest and most prestigious children's book awards. Often described by authors and illustrators as 'the one they want to win' - they are the gold standard in children's literature.

Well, the shortlisted books are here, so if you love reading we need you! Come along to the Study Centre to find out more about joining Carnegie.

We're celebrating Shakespeare Week! Check out how you can win a prize....

Monday 21st April marks the start of Shakespeare week, and to celebrate Shakespeare's 451st Birthday, we're holding a competition. All you have to do is write a poem about one of the animals in Shakespeare's plays - choose a snake; a bear; a lion or a donkey. Compose it in the form of a rhyming triplet so that all 3 lines in each verse rhyme. Mrs Reeve has already had a go....you can read it below. What do you reckon? A*1 ?!!

How To Write a Great Book Review

Describe what the book is about

  • Plot - describe what the book is about, but without giving any spoilers!
  • Characters - who was your favourite, and why; did they feel real to you?
  • Did you enjoy it? - any favourite parts, did it make you laugh or cry, did the story grip you and keep you turning the pages?
  • Highlights - were any scenes written particularly well, were they sad or tense or mysterious scenes?
  • Any weak bits? - what didn't work for you, was it too scary or dull, did the main character just not work for you and if so why?
  • Rate it! - give the book a rating, for example six out of ten

  • And don't forget, if we use your book review it will appear on CubeLive AND you'll get a House Point!
