Andrew johnson
Andrew Johnson had become president on April,1865 when lincoln is assassinated. Johnson takes office with republicans thinking he would submit to there ideas for reconstruction.Johnson vetoed both freedmen's Bureau at and civil rights act. Johnson advises south to reject amendment all Southern stated states but Tennessee reject it.
Thaddeus Stevens
Thaddeus Stevens, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives during Abraham Lincoln's presidency, fought to abolish slavery and helped draft the 14th Amendment during Reconstruction. Was born april 4th in Danville.
14th amendment
this amendment declared that the right to vote on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. by march 1870 enough states had ratified the amendment to make it part of the constitution. The states may not deny anyone that equal protection of the laws. all people born or naturalized in the united states are citizens.
Freedmans Bureau
The refugee crisis prompted congress to establish the Bureau of Refugees, freedman's and abandoned lands. the Bureau was part of the war department and general Oliver o. Howard was appointed is commissioner. it was given the task of feeding and clothing war refugees in the south using surplus army supplies. the Bureau also helped formerly enslaved people find work on plantations.
