Great News for Readers!

Inspire is excited to announce that we now offer Accelerated Reader for students in TK-12th grade! The cost for this program is just $20 per student in instructional funds and can be requested through your HST. Please note this program does not include books.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps parents manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child selects a book rather than having one assigned to them and reads it at their own pace. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them. They may also read articles of interest right on the screen. When finished, your child will take a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) In addition, when an LP meeting comes up, you can easily print up the list of books that your child read and share it with your HST.

If you are interested in signing up for Accelerated Reader, please let your HST know. They will be happy to assist you.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

The State of California requires all public schools to administer the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) to students enrolled in 5th, 7th, and 9th grades. Inspire’s Physical Fitness Testing window is February 4, 2019, through March 21, 2019. We ask that parents bring their students to a test location and stay at the location during testing. Most students are finished in about an hour (test time may be a little more or less depending on the size of the location). For more information, head over here and for locations click here. Please reach out to your HST if you have any questions about your assigned testing location.
Field Trip Booking Tutorial

Want a step by step tutorial for booking your next field trip tickets on Inspiration Station? Watch this tutorial!

Inspiration Station Booking REMINDERS!

Did you know that you can log into your account on Inspiration Station to view ALL of your field trip bookings?? Checking my account is a regular part of my "Field Trip Booking Routine". I check this by selecting My Account from the drop-down in the upper right-hand corner of the Inspiration Station site. Here you will find all of the field trips you have booked. I advise everyone to always double check the field trip you had just booked by checking the amount and names of the tickets purchased. It's a great time to also input the trip date, time, and host contact information into your planner.

Happy Planning!

Utilizing Enrichment Certificates for Service Orders

Please make sure to submit your service orders 2-4 weeks prior to the start of services to allow for sufficient time for your orders to be processed. Once you have your enrichment certificate and give it to your service vendor, that is when you can begin your services.

Every Kid in a Park!

Did you know? There is a federal public lands youth initiative to get all 4th graders and their families to experience the places that are home to our country’s natural treasures, rich history, and vibrant culture.

To help engage and create our next generation of park visitors, supporters and advocates, Federal Land Management agencies, launched the Every Kid in a Park initiative. The immediate goal is to provide an opportunity for each and every 4th-grade student across the country to experience their federal public lands and waters in person throughout the school year.

Every year, beginning September 1, all kids in the fourth grade have access to their own Every Kid in a Park pass at www.everykidinapark.gov. This pass provides free access to national parks across the country.

The Every Kid in a Park pass is good for the 4th grade school year, until August 31, 2019. Information on obtaining the pass is available by visiting www.everykidinapark.gov.

This Week's Vendor Spotlight: Tala Mai Moana

Polynesian dance and culture is centered around the magic of storytelling. This ancient oratory practice can be depicted through song, dance, and chanting. Tala Mai Moana promotes the magic of storytelling from Polynesia through the traditional songs, dances, and chants from the Hawai'ian islands, Tahiti, Samoa and Aotearoa (New Zealand). Through these old traditional stories, students experience the South Pacific through love, compassion, warfare, loss, and everyday activities. In the different classes offered, students will learn basic Hula dance steps, names and also hand movements that help with storytelling; students will eventually learn a full choreography to a classic Hawai'ian mele (song). Students will also learn the basics of Tahitian 'Ura and will be familiar with Tahitian drumming and rhythms--they will then learn about the Samoan Siva and Maori Kapa Haka. In the Hawai'ian Hula portion, students create their stories by working together to combine the basic feet and hand movements to portray their story. Classes encourage teamwork, build good confidence, allow a cultural practice to connect students and enable movement to promote good health in this active class. Classes are every Tuesday evening at the Orange Terrace Community Center in Riverside from 7 - 8 p.m. and are open to everyone. Mahalo, Thank you.

This Week's Curriculum Spotlight: Build Your Library

Building young minds, one book at a time.

This week's curriculum spotlight is a secular literature-based curriculum, that is modeled after the Charlotte Mason style of teaching.

Each Build Your Library secular homeschool program contains full-year lesson plans for history, literature, poetry, art, and science as a PDF download. The comprehensive plans include a reading list, narration cards, vocabulary words, copywork passages, poetry memorization, map work, research projects, notebook pages, science and art projects.

However, it does not contain a math program, so you will need to purchase that separately. While it includes copywork, narration and dictation lessons, you may also want to purchase separate spelling and grammar programs as well, depending on your child.

To get started, you will have some planning to accomplish. You start off with purchasing the PDF (which is very reasonably priced), then start mapping out your year. This includes either purchasing or borrowing the read alouds and readers listed in the PDF Lesson Plan (you will also find their book list on the BYL site for each level) and planning out the activities. Remember to utilize the Inspire Lending Library system or your local Library when looking for the readers and read alouds. When we plan out our next school year, we also note different types of field trips that would be appropriate for that month or lesson. So keep that in mind when making your calendar!

Make sure you head over the Build You Library site. I've already made notes to purchase their Harry Potter Unity Study PDF! Sounds like a fun activity for this Summer!

Teaching Tip of the Week: Unit Studies!

I am in the beginning phases of summer planning. And if your children are like mine and need to keep busy, then planning out a fun AND educational summer is a definite necessity.

I found all of these premade PDF Unit Studies on the Build Your Library site. We're on a Harry Potter kick and was gifted some beautiful hardbound illustrated Harry Potter books.

The unit I am purchasing first covers the initial book in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Here is a synopsis of what you'll find in this unit study:

While reading the book, your child will write their own Wizarding newspaper, make a wand, create a spell glossary (while also learning a bit about Latin and word roots), begin a field guide of Magical Devices, and study a Hogwarts course – this unit covers Herbology – a study of Plants and Herbs with just a touch of magic. You will use two books – Eyewitness Plant (DK Eyewitness Books) and A Kid’s Herb Book: For Children of All Ages as well as complete a variety of projects, from dissecting a flower to studying the lifecycle of a plant to creating a field guide of herbs. This unit study takes approximately 3 weeks to complete and is appropriate for upper-elementary through middle school. The unit is 37 pages and contains more than 10 activity pages, as well as a complete literature study, including vocabulary, copywork and dictation passages, and discussion questions.

I am very excited! You can find a list of all BYL's Unit Studies HERE.

Happy planning!

Hi everyone! I am a mom of 3 awesome kids ranging in age from 10 to 6 years old. My husband and I are high school sweethearts and have been married for 16 years. Having homeschooled our children over the last 6 years in 3 different states, I've found homeschooling here in California, especially with Inspire Charter, has been a great fit for our homeschool journey. I am grateful for our ability to homeschool so freely and I aspire to assist other families with their own homeschool adventures!
