Romania
Popular VS. Folk Culture
Romanian Folk Music
Traditional Romanian music uses instruments such as violins, panpipes, and accordions. These instruments are used to play Bucovina, Crișana, Dobregea. (These are all traditional types of Romanian music.) Romanian folk tunes were made popular in 1989 by Bela Bartók, who recorded them with an Edison Electric Phonograph then rewrote them into sheet music form.
Romanian Popular Music
Most Romanian popular music has been adapted from Romanian folk music. One of the types of popular music is Etno, retaining the traditional Romanian sound but creating a more modern sound by using synthesizers as well as traditional instruments. Some popular Romanian-native musicians include the band Morandi, Inna, and Radiokiller.
Romanian Folk Sports
One traditional folk Romanian sport is called Oină. Oină îs similar to baseball with 11 players per team. Oină games only take 30 minutes compared to the 3 hours in an average baseball game.
Romanian Popular Sports
Football (soccer) is by far the most popular sport in Romania. After all, Romania is part of Europe. Handball, a sport like soccer except throwing the ball instead of kicking it, is a definite second. Romania's national handball team has won the Handball IHF World Cup four times.
Romanian Folk Housing
Traditional rural Romanian houses usually were usually one story and made of wood. These small homes included a porch and gardens enclosed with a wooden fence.
Romanian Popular Housing
Modern homes in Romania range from rustic, log houses to colorful homes with sharp lines. Some traditional features still carry through into modern Romanian architecture such as wooden shingles and two-planed slanted roofs.
Romanian Folk Food
Traditional Romanian foods are dense and savory. Even their desserts include cheese! Cabbage rolls, bean paste with smoked meat, and lamb haggis are a few of the many traditional Romanian folk foods.
Romanian Popular Food
Although Romania has some popular fast food chains such as KFC, most "fast food" restaurants aren't chains. These restaurants offer foods like shnitzel, shawarma (think gyro meat), and cascaval pane (fried cheese).
Romanian Folk Clothing
In traditional Romanian clothing, women wear colorful, embroidered aprons over white petticoats. Men similarly wear a tunic over white pants cinched with colorful sashes.
Romanian Popular Clothing
Romanian fashion is very unique. Romanian street styles usually include some type of overcoat (vests, jackets, sweaters) and a hat of some sort. Embroidered Romanian blouses have also been taken and made Popular in many countries.
