"Notes" from Band

Week of: 9-19-16

Friday was a great day for our 7th grade band students at Prairie View as they celebrated their first performance of the school year at the Fun Run. Students performed The Star Spangled Banner, On Wisconsin, and The Hey Song for their peers at the assembly. This is always a great way to kick off the school year and many this year's sixth grade band students are already looking forward to the performance next year!

Backing things up for a moment, here are the "notes" for this week:

Current Information

This Week's Lesson Schedule

Attached is this week's lesson schedule. Lesson attendance was excellent last week; thank you for your support with the schedule. Consistent lesson attendance may just be the single most important factor to your student's success in band! Each week, we will ask students to bring their chromebook to their lesson to make a calendar appointment with their lesson time for the following week. The schedule will always be posted in the band room and in the band hallway and I will always send the upcoming week's schedule out in my weekly newsletter. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about this week's lesson schedule.

It's On: Music Department Social!

We are planning a music department social for all students involved in performing music at Prairie View! This social is now set to happen from 2:50-4:00 PM on Friday, September 23. Join us for an afternoon of games and fun! Students who attend are encouraged to bring a snack or treat to share.

We could also use a few parent helpers-if you are available to help, please sign up on our volunteer calendar.

Sun Prairie Honor Bands

The Sun Prairie Honors Band for 7th and 8th grade students will meet for a festival on November 19th, 2016. This ensemble serves students from several school districts in southern Wisconsin. It is a one day commitment for participants. Prairie View band students can audition for the ensemble following directions here. Just the process of preparing for the audition will help your child make great gains in their playing. This is an excellent opportunity for Prairie View students to sit side by side with the strongest players in our area. Students who have been a part of the group in the past have enjoyed how this experience has stretched them musically and allowed them to meet new people who are also in band. Please contact Mrs. Sederquist if you have questions!

Information from Prior Newsletters

Band Lesson Academy Registration Now Open!

The Band Lesson Academy is sponsored by the Sun Prairie Band Boosters. The Lesson Academy was created to provide convenient access to quality private instrument instruction for students in the Sun Prairie Band Program. The program is designed to give 6th and 7th grade students access to one-on-one instruction on their instrument with professional musicians/teachers that specialize on specific instruments. Students will focus on fundamental skills that are particular to his or her instrument. Instructors provide individualized assignments and instruction specific to the student’s particular abilities. The benefits of private instrument instruction include: accelerated study of instrument technique and repertoire, preparation of audition materials, or study of subjects of particular interest (e.g. solo literature or improvisation). Private study is a powerful tool in supporting musical growth in students. This program is organized by the Sun Prairie Band Boosters as a service to band students in Sun Prairie Schools.

For information on dates and teachers at PVMS, please click here! The PVMS Lesson Academy will take place after school on Wednesdays.

Registration for this fall is now open! Time slots for lessons are filling quickly. To sign up, please fill out the registration form on the Lesson Academy main page. You will then follow instructions to contact your child's teacher to schedule a time for your child's lesson.

Missed Open House? No Problem!

If you were unable to attend Thursday's open house, you can find links to my handout as well as my presentation slides on our website. Please let your student's teacher know if you have any questions about anything that was covered.

School Fee Reminder

If you have not yet paid the main office for your 2016-2017 school fees, please do so ASAP. This includes the rental fee for any student who is using a school-owned instrument and $17 for a Prairie View Bands Polo t-shirt. This shirt will be part of your student's band concert uniform for the next two years. School district fee waivers apply to band fees; please contact the main office at 834-7803 with questions about school fees.

Volunteer Calendar

We have a very active band department in Sun Prairie and our goal is to provide numerous high-quality musical experiences for all students enrolled in band. None of our efforts could ever be successful without contributions from parents & families of students in band. If you would be willing to volunteer your time and talents to help our students, please let us know on our volunteer calendar. Prairie View dates are marked as "PVMS" and the first date that we are looking for help is our Fall Concert on October 11.

Can you lend a hand?

In addition to events on our volunteer calendar, we are looking for a few parent volunteers to help organize our music library and size students for shirts in the afternoon. If you would be willing to help, please contact us.
