CSE STAFF UPDATE
Weekly Office MEMO
Week Of December 11, 2017
Brad Pitt calls out one of his players in the movie Moneyball. It you haven't seen this movie, it involves Brad Pitt putting together an unorthodox team and get them to perform. In this video, he calls out a star and asks him to be a great role model and be in the present for his teammates becasue he needs leaders on the team.
I have the unique perspective to see and hear a lot of opinions and perceptions at CSE. There are times when we love each other, and there are times that we fight with each other. In the end, we need to play together. Show each other what it means to be winners and leaders. Much like Brad Pitt, I am asking all of you to play together and be leaders at CSE!
On that note, CSE is a busy place that runs on tight schedules. Please be aware of a couple of items.
1. We do not have a central clock system. This may mean that the perception of time could be off by up to 5 minutes in some instances.. and if that is on both ends, it could be more. Please be cognizant of time.. a better gauge is computer clocks, cell phone clocks and Fitbit times.
2. Everyone's time is valuable and we should honor the kids schedules. That means making sure students are given appropriate times to transition to Title, EL, AA, Specialists, Counseling or any other specialized service. Everyone wants their times with kids. That being said, things happen. Be flexible and Ask Why before offering Judgment.
3. Generous Assumptions- Everyone wants what is best for kids and although we may believe we see things different at times, I encourage you to stay TOP 20 and
A: Be Curious
B: See the Problem/ Own the Problem
C. Keep Your Day
D. Mind Your Own Bobber and Trust Others First
We all have our daily struggles and outside influences that we bring with us to work (including myself). Our job is promote an experience with kids that exemplifies our beliefs in Social, Emotional and Intellectual Growth forAll.
My expectation is that we put aside our negative assumptions and keep students first. Mind your Own Bobber...
If schedules are difficult, I am more than willing to problem solve.
If conflicts come up, I am here to help facilitate positive outcomes.
If you are having a hard day, we are all here to lift you up.
I care tremendously for each of you and want you to be successful. Your Job is to be Successful and My Job is to help you be successful.
#Keep Your Day and stay #CSESTRONG

Daily 5 Tip of the Week.. from the DAILY CAFE
The Daily 5 Finale: Sharing
Home / Tip of the Week / Tip of the Week
By Lori Sabo
December 8, 2017
Issue #491
If you’ve ever been to a concert, you may have noticed that the final number moves, inspires, or leaves a lasting impression on the audience. It’s often a final moment of beautiful work that brings a meaningful time together to a close. We want Daily 5 to result in the same kind of feeling, so we make time for sharing before we end Daily 5 for the day.
Sharing takes 10 minutes or less and consists of three to five students sharing how a strategy helped them as a reader or writer. This varies depending on their individual goals and strategies.
- One student may want to read a portion of text to demonstrate their progressing expression and fluency.
- Another may want to share how Flip the Sound enabled them to read a word accurately.
- It might be a wiggler, who proudly announces that they stayed in one place and read the whole time.
- Another may share that they played around with different leads to a story before settling on the one they liked best.
- Often, it’s a student we prompted to share when we informally conferred with them.
- We might take a moment or two to restate the focus lessons of the day, and have students share by raising hands or sharing with an elbow buddy how they tried them out with some success.
We monitor turns, making sure every child has an opportunity to share at least once a week. There are several ways to do this. Students might have an assigned sharing day or we might use a check-off sheet and prompt students when it’s their turn. However we choose to keep track, making time for sharing gives everyone a chance to review and celebrate the learning that occurred that day. Sharing helps end each Daily 5 session with a smile and a sigh . . . letting the last note of the morning resonate in beauty.

What I love most about my job at CSE
What I love most about my job is the opportunity to explore new possibilities through multiple mediums. To have a chance to get messy and have fun with all the students at CSE is truly a rewarding experience. The kids here have so much to offer to myself and each other that there is never a dull moment. This keeps things exciting and fresh. You just never know whats coming next.
Favorite Food
Steak with blue cheese on top
Favorite Children's Book.. and Why!
My favorite children's book author would have to be Dr. Suess because of his wonderful imagination. His books are always so much fun to read and look through. 2nd in line to Dr. Suess would have to be Herve' Tullet, this author has created a lot of fun interactive books that I have been using to teach color mixing with kindergarten. This has been a lot of fun also as the kids think the book is magic!
Hobbies
My hobbies include making art, building projects around the house, hiking, being outside, or on the lake, and gardening/flowers.
Interesting FACTS about ME
When I was in middle school I made it in the Annandale newspaper for spearing a carp that was 7 lbs shy of the state record. The paper was titled, boy captures carp, with a full size picture of me trying to lift the fish off the ground. Apparently, there wasn't much to talk about that week in the paper, because they gave me a pretty good size spread. lol
There is a lot more to the story, so if your interested just ask. The picture below is not me, but it is somewhat similar in comparison as the carp was much bigger than I was.
