Natural Resources and Disasters

Air

Air is made up of 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 1% Argon and .93% Carbon Dioxide. Air is in our atmosphere. We have four layers of our atmosphere which is what we breathe. One effect that air causes on us is without it their would be no life on Earth.

Wind

Wind is our atmosphere moving. One thing wind does is it produces energy. We have specially made wind turbines to produce energy with wind. This cuts down on burning coal and putting pollution into our air. Without wind, would we even be able to see across the street?

Soil

Wet climate zones impact soil because the water makes soil more rich and better for farming. Dry climate zones dry out the soil and make the soil dry. That is not good for farming. The rain forests make the soil muddy and soft because it is raining most of the time. A gulf makes the soil wash away.

Rocks and Minerals

Rocks are the solid mineral material forming part of the surface of the earth and other similar planets. Rocks help stop erosion, which is a positive effect because that means that the land will erode slower.

Minerals are a solid inorganic substance of natural occurrence, without minerals we would not be able to have plants or any healthy food, we would just blow up!

Water (Fresh and Salt)

Desert do not have that much water. It is very hard to find water in a desert climate zone. Tropical Savannas have a lot of rain. It is a good water source. Lakes and rivers have a lot of freshwater that you could drink. Oceans have a lot of salt water. But you can not drink it.

Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels are a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from remains of living organisms. This gives us energy, this effects us because without energy such as power, we couldn't do half the things we do now such as this.

Sun

The sun is a star that sustains our life on earth. The Sun is made up of 70% Hydrogen, 28% Helium and 1.5% of Carbon, Nitrogen and oxygen. We are the perfect distance from the sun which makes us able to sustain life. For example the sun is like a big heavy blanket and a flashlight when you are camping.

Forests

are regions that are prominently covered w/ trees and woody vegetation. Forests offer a source of food, and wood supply.

minerals

Minerals are a solid inorganic substance of natural occurrence. Without minerals we wouldn't have any rocks or food. We need different minerals in our body to live.

Natural Disasters

Avalanche

Mountains affect avalanches because this natural disaster doesn't occur any where else. Avalanches occur when snow, ice, and rocks fall rapidly down a mountainside. Tundra is the normal climate zone of a mountain. So Tundras are where avalanches happen.

Blizzards

Blizzards can happen in any cold weather climate zone. The weather just has to have high winds and snow. Since blizzards can happen anywhere no specific land form affects them.

Tropical Storms

Humid subtropical and Tropical Rain forests are where these disastrous windy storms occur. The climate zones are normally found on tropical islands. The high-wind storms form only over tropical oceans. An ocean is a land form that affects these because the storms form in oceans.

Earthquakes

Although earthquakes can happen anywhere. Earthquakes happen mainly between oceanic and continental plates. A delta is found between these plates. So earthquakes are affected by deltas because it is around where earthquakes happen. Marine west coast climate zones are located around oceans and land. Earthquakes are affected by this climate zone because the majority of earthquakes happen in Marine West Coast.

Tsunami

A tsunami is when a huge wave hits land. An ocean has to be there for it to occur. They need an ocean because that is where the wave comes from. Oceans are mostly in marine west coast that's the climate zone tsunamis happen in.

Floods

A flood is water overflowing over it's usall confinments, usally onto dry land. Floods usally happen near rivers, streams, lakes and oceans.

Landslides

Landslides are the sliding down of a mass of earth or rock from a mountain or cliff. Landslides usally occur where there are very hilly/mountaion regions

Heat waves

Heat waves are prolonged periods of abnormally hot weather. Heat waves occur all over the world, but can lead to massive deaths because they cause heat strokes.

Tornado

Tornadoes are a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system. This can destroy everything. Usually this type of natural disaster happens in the Midwest. For a tornado to occur, you need warm-mild temperatures and high speed winds.

Storms (non cyclone)

Storms non Cyclone are classified as thunder storms. Thunder storms are a storm with thunder and lightning and typically also heavy rain or hail. Thunder storms usually occur in the spring when we get lots of rainfall. Usually thunderstorms signify a cold front.

Novel Connection

Novel connection to natural disasters: In Catching Fire the arena is a clock. A disaster happens every hour. All of these are based on natural disasters. For example, the giant wave is based on a tsunami. Without the disasters the arena would not work as well. That's how natural disasters are impacted in Catching Fire.

Novel Connections

Novel connection to natural resources: In Uglies by Scott Westerfield they use hover-boards. The only way for the hover boards to work is if there is metal in the ground. The metal makes the hover-boards float and without it they would fall. Outside of the city there are natural minerals underneath the river. That is how they take advantage of natural resources in Uglies.

Lightning Strikes

Did you know that Lightning strikes every second many times? A lightning strike can be very dangerous because the lighting has a lot of electricity, it has both negative and positive energy. Also Lightning can sometimes cause other natural disasters after the storm.Finally. Lightning strikes can affect peoples houses because if a lightning bolt hits a house it can cause it to go on fire.

volcanic Eruptions

Volcanic Eruptions: A volcano lets out lava and ashes but volcanos are not a very common so they do not affect all people. Some people experience volcano’s and when they erupt they can be very dangerous so when people are on an island or somewhere you need to get away from the volcano because it has very hot burning lava, which is very dangerous.

Wild Fires

Wild fire a large, destructive fire that spreads quickly over woodland or brush. Also wild Fires can spread extremely quickly, and can last for days or weeks. Wild fires can happen anywhere, but they usually start in places that are going through a drought.

Natural Disaster preperation

Japan Educates

Every schoolchild in Japan will be familiar with earthquake drills in which alarms sound and children retreat under their desks to shelter from falling debris. In Tokyo kids after the earthquake walk around wearing protective helmets.

What does Japan Do in the event

Japan kids and adults get under tables and protect their heads. The students do practice this at school to practice for the event.
