Risk Activities
Due 9/12/2014
Agenda's
This week in group we discussed agenda's, their function, and expectations for the agenda. Each grade level discussed it based on their needs. If your student is having difficulty getting their agenda please let Mrs. Deckinga know and we will try to get one. ALL RBMS students must have an agenda. Please refer to my website for more information: http://goo.gl/raezLv
Parents: Check in is from 8:45-8:55am in B214. Check out is from 4:05 - 4:15pm in either B214 or the Cafeteria. You will know if your student checked in / out by the teacher initials on that day in their agenda. Please encourage your student to utilize this resource. This could be through a system of rewards for using the agenda or check in / out.
Students and Parents: Go to your teachers websites and look at their calendars. Mark any upcoming due dates in your agenda.
Let's Play!
Yahtzee is a great game for families to play in order to reinforce basic math skills. All you need are 5 dice and score sheets. http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/yahtzee.pdf
All it needs is a little...
This week we asked that students make a list of descriptive words as they read. Descriptive words help us create those pictures in our heads as we read. What we were noticing is that students were reading over those words and not noticing how they influenced the meaning of the text. When you get the opportunity this week, describe things in your environment. Have your student describe things. Think: What do your eyes see? What do your ears hear? What does your nose smell? What does your skin feel? What does your tongue taste? Play I spy descriptive words as you go through your week. See if you can find them around you. Bring in a list of the descriptive words you find or send in pictures of them if they are posted somewhere really cool. Stickers will be awarded for your lists!
Lab Safety and You
This past week all science classes covered lab safety in some way. Discuss with your parents how lab safety applies around the house (typically kitchen, bathrooms, and garage). Send Mrs. Deckinga an email about your conversation. What were you like, "Wow! I didn't know that!" or what were some common sense things?
Just a Thought
"If the purpose for learning is to score well on a test, we've lost sight of the real reason for learning." - Jeannie Fullbright
I know that participating in these Risk activities can be a challenge. They are intended to help us grow. Please do not disregard these activities. I promise there will be rewards for participating in them. Changing our mentality from learning to earn a grade to learning for personal growth is a huge shift of focus. Our campus is working toward learning for growth. Come along for the journey and the rewards will be infinite.
