News from Mrs. Hilcher- Principal of Grapevine Elementary

Week of May 16-20

Extracurricular Activities

In the fall of 2015, the district solicited parent, staff and community member feedback through a new engagement tool, ThoughtExchange. Upon reviewing the feedback the district received, it became apparent that our elementary parents were interested in adding extracurricular activities to the school day. Unfortunately, due to the elements that must be taught through the state mandated curriculum, and the restrictions by the state for our school day, we are not able to add extracurriculars as part of our everyday life at Grapevine Elementary. In order to meet the needs of our families the district is looking at offering some extracurricular activities after school for a fee. If you are interested in possibly participating in this after-school offering, please take this brief survey to provide us with your feedback on course offerings and schedule.

Fast Passes

It's almost time to celebrate our Stars at their grade level Success Ceremonies. If you are planning to attend, please consider signing up for a Fast Pass. All visitors will need to check in and receive a badge in the front office. We will be utilizing our normal Raptor badge system which requires a valid photo ID. If you would like to speed up the process in obtaining your badge, please complete this google form and we will have your badge pre-printed and available in our "Fast Pass" line. This "Fast Pass" will only work if you have been at GES this school year and we have already scanned your photo ID. Please list full names as written on your driver's license. Any visitor who has not been here, or didn't let us know in advance, will need to wait while photo IDs are scanned and their badge is processed. Please note that a photo ID will be shown in order to pick up your fast pass and as always, to check in to the system for the first time. The deadline to request a Fast Pass for all Success Ceremonies is Tuesday, May 17th, at 3 p.m. Link to the form:

We hope you will take advantage of our "Fast Pass" concept and avoid the crowds and long waits. Fast Passes will be available at 7:15 a.m. on the morning of your child's Success Ceremony or 9:15 a.m. on the morning of our fifth grade graduation.

We look forward to celebrating with you soon!

Planning for 2016-2017

Please use the following link to communicate your family's plans for the 2016 - 2017 school year. A survey will need to be completed for each current GES student in your family. Please complete by Friday, May 20th. Thank you for your help in our planning for next year!

Dress Code

As the weather turns warmer, we are starting to see students wearing more summer style clothing. As a reminder, our dress code states the following:
  • shorts or skirts must be long enough to extend mid-thigh and allow students to be able to stand, sit and/or bend with modesty
  • shirts must cover the midriff at all times
  • tank/tube tops with proper underclothing must be worn with an over blouse buttoned halfway up
  • sleeveless blouses/tops must have the outside edge of the sleeve touch the outside edge of the shoulder

For more information, please refer to page 13 in the GCISD Student-Parent Handbook and Code of Conduct for 2015-2016. Students who violate the dress code will be sent to Nurse Burwell for a clothing change.

SHAC Information

SHAC: The State of Texas mandates that each school district have a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). SHAC assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the implementation of a coordinated health program including health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, healthy school environment, staff health promotion and family/community involvement. SHAC is in need of dedicated members for the 2016-2017 school year. See the attached flyer for more information.

Summer Istation

Did you know that you can use Istation throughout the summer months to combat summer slide? Istation believes a break from school needn’t be a break from learning! The Istation characters Justin Time and Paige Turner put together a short video about using Istation Home during the summer. Watch Paige and Justin discuss Istation Home on this video: http://bit.ly/1qnQpE4

Information From Nurse Burwell

  • The health clinic is in need of gently used pants and shorts in size 6 through 14 girl and boy. The clinic is also in desperate need of new boys and girls underwear in sizes 6 -14. All donations greatly appreciated. If your child needs frequent clothing changes it is a great idea to keep a backup set in their backpack
  • Please remember that if your child has medication in the clinic that it will need to be picked up before 11:45am on the last day of school. Any medication not picked up will be discarded. Please contact me if you would like your medication to be sent home with your child at johanna.burwell@gcisd.net

Information From Mrs. Horn

Thank you for your time, energy, and effort to help support our GES Stars! http://goo.gl/forms/el1dSg0oxO

Talking About Race for Parents

How do we have conversations about race or racism with our children? How do we develop a positive racial identity in our children? Talking About Race for Parents: Raising Children for Racial Justice--

This training provides all parents, guardians and caregivers with strategies to effectively address issues of race and racism with their children. Through interactive activities and dialogue, participants will learn how children see race, and gain skills for approaching age-appropriate conversations using a racial equity lens. They will also practice strategies to promote positive racial identity development in children, including addressing misconceptions about race and reversing unconscious racial bias.

Snack Donations Needed

For some of our families, providing a nutritious snack each day to assist their GES star’s performance throughout the day does not happen consistently because of food insecurities. If you are able, please donate individually packaged Goldfish or pretzels in order to help us provide that snack for students that arrive at school without it because of the insecurities. This would not pertain to students that simply forgot a snack that day. If your Star forgets his/her snack often, sending multiple days worth of snacks might help. For questions, please feel free to contact Angela Horn at angela.horn@gcisd.net or 817-251-5740. Thank you for your continued generosity and thoughtfulness.
