April 2015 PD- Spring PLS
I enjoyed the opportunity to meet face-to-face with my colleagues from GAVS this month. I especially appreciated the department time where I got to share my best teaching practice of "how to make grading stamps instructional" with my WL colleagues. Updates on the GAVS vision and policy is always welcomed.
March 2015 Professional Development -Remediation
I attended the PD session on Remediation. I enjoyed seeing examples of remediation from various other disciplines. I also was unaware that instructors can offer a grade replacement opportunity as part of GAVS remediation policy. I tend to select my remediation opportunities based on student performance data. Often fewer than 10% of the class opts to participate in remediation activities. This is certainly an area where I could focus a personal teaching goal for next year.
Februrary 2015- Student (heart) Differentation
I was a collaborator and presenter for this 4 week series on Differentiation. Kelly Gardner and I will present on how to differentiate Communication in the online classroom on 2/26. We will show case types and strategies to improve communication in order to build stronger learning communities and support.
January Professional Learning - Mandated Reporter
In January, I completed the required Mandated report course. I learned valuable information about expectations and requirements for being a mandated reporter in Georgia.
I am a presenter for ePortfolio week professional development in December
October Professional Learning- Illinois Virtual School Summer Presentation
In July, I co-presented with Carrie Madden for IVS on ways to improve communication in online teaching. This was my first experience presenting a major workshop. Our presentation lasted 4 hours. We utilized to GAVS TOOL and covered every method of communication used in our classrooms to support student learning. I hope to have similar opportunities in the future.
October Professional Learning: Latin Teacher Meeting
I planned a 30 minute Latin Teacher Chat to share resources and discuss ways to improve our department. Feedback was positive and we decided to meet 3 times a semester to share and collaborate. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 4th.
September Professional Learning: Suicide Prevention Training
This 2 hour online training was helpful by providing strategies and tips for helping at risk students. Overall I learned that communication and diligence is most important when dealing with situations where students are in need of help. It is always best to refer any possible situation to a guide counselor.
August Professional Development: 2014 Summer Professional Learning Symposium
I attended the 2 day professional learning symposium in Athens, Georgia. I enjoyed several sessions as well as being a presenter. I particular I found Sarah Newman's two sessions on Special Needs Accommodations most helpful. In particular, I appreciated the plethora of websites and tools provided at the end of each session. Participants also practiced sample "scenarios" within small groups. Various strategies were discussed. Additionally, I attended 2 sessions for my current development project. The SME training was very helpful and allowed me to ask questions and meet my developer. I also presented with my colleagues Kelly Gardner and Carrie Madden. Our presentation focused on ways to increase student motivation in the online classroom. Feedback received was positive. I hope to have the opportunity to present again.
