Summer Checkouts (Reposted)

Below are some suggestions for checking out books to students or parents for the summer.

  1. Email Kim, letting her know you will be checking out items for the summer so she can change the due dates.

  2. Decide if a parent must be present to check out books.

  3. Decide if you are going to require a form to be signed. See example.

  4. Decide on the number of books each student/parent may checkout.

  5. Set and communicate a date to parents/students/staff when you will be checking out summer items. This date should begin the week of May 22nd.

  6. Decide if you are going to set up circulation times in June while the front office is open. Parents and students can come exchange books during this time. OPTIONAL.

  7. Communicate the due date to parents/students/staff Aug. 26, 2016.

  8. Communicate the dates the front office is open throughout June and the beginning of August for book drop-off.

  9. Run overdue reports of summer items during the first week of school.

District Administration Article

In late March, I was contacted by Kylie Lacey, Associate Editor/Content Marketing Editor for District Administration magazine regarding a case study about the NEISD Library Services journey with OverDrive. Here is a link to the article which will be published in the June issue.

3D Printing - Braille project

Sara Romine at Woodstone was hesitant about the whole "3D printing thing", but recently was awarded an Afinia H480 printer. She practiced printing a few items (read about this on Sara's blog, Lessons from a Laughing Librarian) and then told her Coding Club about it. They started bringing in designs to print.

The husband of the Woodstone Science Lab Assistant had recently lost his sight and is a student at Crisis Cole Rehabilitation Center for the Blind in Austin. Sara designed a keychain with the words, Stay Strong, in braille, printed it and sent it to the assistant's husband.

With some encouragement from Library Services, Sara decided to have some 5th-grade students design motivational keychains in braille for the May graduates at the Center. This real world project was so successful and we are sure the students have grown in their design skills, as well as in empathy for others.

Great job, Sara!

Congratulations to Wendy Howk

Please help us congratulate Wendy Howk, the new Library Instruction Coordinator for Library Services! We are very excited to welcome Wendy to the team and she will begin in early June.
