News from Mrs. Drudy's Class
We exist so children can excel.
The Week at a Glance
We will not be introducing a new story next week. Instead, we will be reviewing previously learned reading concepts. I have, however, included the spelling list for when return from spring break. It is not an easy list, so I thought students might like to get a head start on the practicing/studying. Just for fun, we will be working with these beach-related words:
Beach-Related Spelling Words
- towel
- lotion
- waves
- tide
- ocean
- shark
- starfish
- sunshine
- sunscreen
- seashell
- beach
- volleyball
- shoreline
- stingray
- seaweed
- sunburn
- sandcastle
- jellyfish
- sunglasses
- shoreline
These words are in Spelling City for practice.
Literacy Night
I hope to see many families at our Literacy Night on Wednesday. We have a fun night planned that includes many beach-themed learning stations. You'll also want to take time to check out the 4th Grade Hoosier Wax Museum.
Making a special appearance that evening will be Prince Charming, Rapunzel, Prince Eric, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Prince from Beauty and the Beast!! High school volunteers will be there in costume to read short stories to students They will be located in the “extra” 5th grade room and a schedule will be posted as to when each reader will be there. There will also be a little gift for each student who attends the readings. Most characters will be available for photo opportunities in our Photo Booth that night! You won't want to miss the fun.
Mrs. Treadway's Trisomy Awareness Day
You might already be aware that Mrs. Treadway's family has a little angel, Wyatt, who succumbed to Trisomy several years ago. In honor of her, and in memory of little Wyatt, we are inviting all students to wear either purple or blue on Monday. We, as a staff, have been invited to "Dress Like Mrs. Treadway" on Monday if we donate toward the Trisomy Foundation. I'm in! I hope to look out into a sea of purple and blue on Monday.
Library Schedule Changes
Due to Beach Day on Friday, Mrs. Grissom has allowed us to reschedule our library visit for Thursday, March 21. Please remind your child to have his or her library book returned on that day.
Basket Bash
I want to thank those of you who've already turned in your Basket Bash donation. We cannot do this without help from our parents. If you care to contribute, I will cheerfully accept late donations.
Iditarod Fun
Data entry and mathematical problem solving has been alive and well in our classroom this week as students followed the mushers and their sled dog teams across the vast wilderness of Alaska. I'm sure you've been told that Hagen's musher, Peter Kaiser, along with his team of dogs are the 2019 Iditarod champions. Many of the mushers and teams that students from our class have chosen to follow are still out on the trail. It will be interesting to see if everyone will have finished the race in Nome by Monday.
Also this week, students have participated in another S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) challenge. This time, they designed and built the official finish line for Nome, AK. Did (s)he tell you that the original finish line was red Kool-Aide poured as a line in the snow? Crazy! Be sure to check out the pictures of students involved in this challenge. We also took a look at some of the ways dog kennels address the dogs' need to run (think hamster wheel). With that in mind, the kiddos designed and created a model of their inventions. It was just so very rewarding to watch them put their engineering expertise at work. We even had a family extend the learning at home!
Be looking for your child's Iditarod data binder to make its way home following his/her musher's finish. This is his/hers to keep. Hopefully, it will serve as fond, fond memories for them. Many of my students from last year have stopped in to inquire about the progress of this years Last Great Race. I've heard a good many of our students say, "I'm going to follow the race next year, too!" I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to see them so excited about learning.
Next Week's Share Topic
Share about your favorite sport. Do you play it or just watch it? You might want to bring in some of the equipment you use to play that sport. Pictures, trophies, etc. are fine, too.
Upcoming Snow Make Up Days
As you know, we still have days to make up from inclement weather. We will be holding another eLearning Day on Friday, April 19th. After having experienced one of these days, please don't hesitate to let me know how I might make the next one even better. As we said from the start, this is a work in progress for us, and we certainly welcome your feedback. On Monday, April 22, school will be in session as a snow make up day.
Beach Day
Remember, the annual LES Beach Day is on March 22, the last day before spring break. Students are invited to wear school appropriate beach type clothing (hats, sunglasses, and shorts) for our celebration. Beach clothes must still follow school rules. On this day students will enjoy "beach" volleyball, a limbo contest, Karaoke singing, snow cones, and other beach-related activities.
Flipgrid
I am soooooo impressed with these second graders' grasp of technology. They are doing things that I would have never believed a second grader could do. Then I realized it's like anything else: when I set the bar high, our kiddos rise to meet the expectation. We have introduced two new pieces of technology this week, and many of them are already experts. Have your child tell you about backchannelchat and Flipgrid. If you'd like to take a peek at what they did just today in Flipgrid, then simply click here.
Box Tops Totals
We are preparing for another Box Tops for Education Drop. Please get the word out to family and friends so we might have another amazing donation. Our school gets much-needed funds from this initiative, and we thank you for your participation.
