Renaissance Art
Come and visit the wonderful artwork of the Renaissance period. The European Renaissance was a time filled with great artists. The artwork of these times are some of the most famous and well known pieces of art today. The time of the Renaissance, 2305-1650 consisted of many different kinds of artwork, painting, and sculptures of the human body. Some of the most famous painting are the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Mona Lisa, and the last super. One of the most famous sculptures is The David by Michelangelo.

The Ceiling of The Sistine Chapel
The Sistine Chapel was completed in 1482, but did not get the large amount of fame until the 1500's. In 1508 the artist Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the chapel. He created his own scaffold (wooden platform on brackets that's attached to the wall). The painting was finished in 1512. The painting contains many Biblical scenes including, the nine scenes from the Book of Genesis (the creation of Adam), series of Frescos depicting the Life of Moses, and the life of Christ.
Statue of David
The Statue of David by Michelangelo was started in 1501. The statue was originally created to be on e of the series of prophets that would border the roof of the Florence Cathedral. The David was then places in the public square. The David by Michelangelo was not the first piece of artwork to portray the image of David, he was a Biblical hero who was a favored subject in the art of Florence. Michelangelo did not portray David the same as previous artists he gave him a tense face ready for combat, with his full wight on one leg.
Mona Lisa
The Mona Lisa is still a mystery to this day, whats behind that smile, and who was the real inspiration for the face? It is the best known, written, and sung about peice of artwork of all time. The painting the Mona LIsa was finished by Renaissance artist Leonardo Da Vinci in 1506 three years after the painting was started. The half length painting is said to be a portrait of LIsa Gheradini, wife of Francesco de Giocondo.
The popular name the Mona Lisa means Ma'am Lisa, mona being short for madonna; ma'am in French. The inspiration for the Mona Lisa is being questioned today, but as of for now the Mona LIsa is still portrayed as the face of Lisa Gheradini.
The Last Supper
The last super 1495-1498 is a famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci. The scene of the painting represents the last super of Jesus with his disciples. Each disciple in the painting is expressing their reaction to when God said that one of them will betray him. The 460cm x 880cm painting also symbolizes the Holy Trinity. The painting has the symbol of three, the father, the son, and the holy spirit; the disciples sit in groups of three, three windows, and Jesus had a a triangular shape.
