Math Empowers Kindergarten
Middletown Township Public Schools
Kindergarten First Trimester 2018 - 2019
Contained in this newsletter you will find some fun, spooky, and thought provoking resources to use in you daily math instruction. First, check out the blog post from Christina Tondevold, "The Recovering Traditionalist" about why you should use number paths instead of number lines to help our kinder friends learn to count. Second, encourage mathematical discourse with some fun and spooky Halloween inspired Which One Doesn't Belong from Mashup Math and Estimation 180 activities. Continue to review shapes with my new favorite Geometric Subitize Cards from Graham Fletcher. Finally, read up about Depth of Knowledge Activities from Robert Kaplinsky and use to differentiate for all learners in your class.
Number Paths vs Number Lines in K-2 Classrooms
In the blog post Number Paths vs Number Lines by Christina Tondevold, she explains why number paths should be used in our K-2 classrooms. "A number path is isolated objects in a path, that allow kids to count things. A number line is a wonderful tool, and you’ve probably seen some of my last posts that are all about the power of number lines, but for our young kiddos, a number line is actually a length-based model. You’re counting the length of something. Our young kids need something to count, not just the length, not a measurement. So a number path helps our kids to see the objects in a line and be able to count individual objects instead of having to count a length, which is weird to have to count for our young kiddos." Which One Doesn't Belong Halloween
Encourage mathematical discourse in your classroom and add some Halloween fun to your upcoming lessons by using these Halloween 'Which One Doesn't Belong?'(WODB) math warm-up/cool-down activities from Anthony at Mashup Math.com. Click here for Google Slides with the 2 Mashups.
Depth of Knowledge Chart by Robert Kaplinsky
It is important we consider the deeper levels of understanding required (and often developed) with rich math questions. Click here to visit Robert Kaplinsky's site to use these resources to push your kindergarten friends' understanding of numbers and their parts and see where your students will be going in grades 1 and beyond.
Estimation 180
Help build your students' number sense 1 day at a time using these Fabulously Fun Warm Ups! Consider recording student responses and then place them on a number path that you create. Click Here to visit the Estimation 180 site.
Graham Fletcher, Geometric Subitize Cards
Continue to practice your students' ability to name shapes and describe their attributes while you are building their subitizing abilities and fluency with number parts by downloading and using these Geometric Subitize cards by Graham Fletcher. Click here to visit Graham's site, download the cards and view a video on how to use them.
