NEW REALITY IN CHINA
My good friend, Kerry Sachetta, from Joplin Schools, shared an interesting email last week from a school librarian in China. Take a few minutes to see how education has changed, at least for a while in China.

LEGISLATORS BACK IN SESSION TODAY
From budget to potential harmful education bills, we need to be paying attention starting today for the next three weeks as the Missouri House of Representatives and Senate are back in session. We just don't know what could happen. If you haven't read the legislative bulletin from Friday, there are new talking points for you to be made aware of. There is a lot of uncertainty in the days ahead. The session will end on May 15 at 6:00 PM. Stay tuned.
REGIONAL AND STATEWIDE ZOOM MEETINGS
Our statewide Zoom meeting topic on Wednesday will focus on graduation. We have representatives from Jostens who will enlighten us on some novel graduation ideas as we honor the Class of 2020. If you missed the MSHSAA update last Wednesday with Kerwin Urhahn, I have included the video in this Messenger. We appreciate Kerwin's leadership during these troubling times.

SCHOOL LIFE IN CHNA AS WRITTEN BY AN AMERICAN TEACHER LIVING IN HANGZHOU CITY, ZHEJIANG, CHINA
Thanks to Dr. Kerry Sachetta, Assistant Superintendent for Operations, and Dr. Sarah Mwangi, Assistant Superintendent, both of Joplin Schools, for sharing this email from Amy Pierce, Librarian, Wahaha International School in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang, China. The school is grades four through eighth and is an IB school.
Today, our students in grades 4-8 (our highest grade) came back to school. As our (Chinese) vice principal stated – It shows a social confidence – for families to send their children back to school.
We have a new normal now. I have to take my temperature and log it by 7:30 am. Then my temperature is registered by a facial recognition program that also takes my temperature when I arrive at school at 7:45 am. Then at lunch, my temperature is taken again. This is every day. Also, I show my green QR health code everywhere I go. In the morning, I have to take a "screenshot" of my green QR code and upload it to my school by 7:30 am. Then, when I arrive at school, I have to show my QR code.
Students have to bring 4 masks to school every day. Upon arrival, they throw away the mask they wore to school and put on a new one (the new one is optional). After lunch, they throw away their morning mask and wear a new mask (again, optional). At the end of the day, the afternoon mask is thrown away and they wear a new mask home (not optional).
When students arrive at school, they sanitize their hands (with a natural sanitizer called Enozo). After recess, they sanitize their hands. Before and after lunch, they sanitize. Also, upon return from the afternoon recess and before going home they sanitize. Their desks are also sanitized about this many times.
They don’t go to specials or library, we go to them. Our books and supplies also have to be sanitized between classes. The books go into a closet at the end of the day where a UV light is turned on and books are shelved the next day.
At lunch, the students sit one at a table to eat and their lunches are brought to them. At recess and any time they are traveling in the halls, they stand 1 meter (yard) apart.
Some may think this all seems extreme; however, the procedures have been put in place to keep social confidence. If just one child gets sick, the whole structure would crumble. And not just at our school, but possible countrywide.
I see it as a new way of life for a while. Also, I just found out the lights are on for 1 hour every night.
