Dear Everitt Families:
Hooray! It was wonderful to have our students back this week. We miss those who are currently impacted by COVID and can't wait to have them back too.
We met as a staff on Tuesday and learned about how to have restorative conversations when faced with unexpected classroom behaviors. In our PTA meeting this week, members of the PTA were interested in how they might use restorative conversations at home. Below, I have described how to have these types of conversations with your children. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Our teachers have asked me to remind you to send pens, pencils and notebooks to school with your children so that they have all of the supplies that they need to be successful. Please reach out if we can support you in providing some of those things for your student.
I saw a comic about New Year's on a friend's Facebook page and was inspired by it. I shared it with the staff and I've shared it below with all of you. It was a good reminder to me that we get what we grow. So even in the midst of the many truly difficult things that our community is experiencing and has experienced in 2021, we are going to plant flowers at Everitt (both literally and figuratively). We're going to invest our time, love and energy in the amazing young people that we are blessed to serve.
Thank you for supporting and believing in your neighborhood school. It is our privilege to partner with you!

Restorative Conversations at Home
You can use this tool at home as well. The first step is to have each person describe what happened from their point of view. Have your child talk first about what happened. Be sure that you set ground rules from the beginning of the conversation that you will allow each other to finish and won't interrupt each other. The second step is for each of you to talk about who was impacted by what happened. This is another step in which your child should talk first. There are some alternate questions that you can use if your child is struggling to understand the impact on others. The third step is to ask what part each of you can take responsibility for. In this step, I would encourage you to go first so that you can model taking responsibility for your child. In the final step, you both talk about how you can make things right and repair the harm to the relationship.
As a parent, I have used restorative conversations in conflicts between two of my children and in situations where something caused harm in the relationship between one of my children and myself.
We are happy to help if you would like more information!

Lunch Bunch and Thursday Morning Volunteers
Want to lend a hand at the school? Sign up to spend some time socializing with the students during lunch and recess or on Thursday mornings before late start. Thank you in advance for donating your time and making our community stronger!
Lunches are broken up into 3 sections. With some exceptions, they are generally 6th graders 1st, 7th graders 2nd and 8th graders 3rd. Each lunch is 30 minutes. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays they run one after another, on the block days of Wednesday and Thursday there is a 10-15 minute gap between lunch sections. If you want to come for just one or 2 sections that is no problem, but you are also welcome to stay the entire lunch time!
When you arrive go to the main office to sign-in and fill out volunteer paperwork (the first time only) and then head to the cafeteria or library. You can bring an activity (like a football, 4 square ball etc) or just join in with what's going on!
Questions? Email everittpta@gmail.com or call 720-291-1435 (Dan Weinstein)

Our Next Social Emotional Learning Unit
Second Step Middle School is designed to support your child in developing the knowledge and skills to help stop bullying. Students will learn how to recognize bullying in various contexts, how to use strategies to stand up safely to bullying, and how to seek help if they or someone they know is being bullied.
Here are some key definitions your child will be learning:
• Bullying: intentional physical, verbal, or social aggression. It’s often repeated over time and occurs when there’s a real or perceived power imbalance.
• Bystander: anyone who’s aware that bullying is happening
• Cyberbullying: the use of technology to harass, threaten, or intimidate another person
• Physical bullying: hurting someone’s body or possessions
• Relational bullying: hurting someone’s reputation or relationships, such as by excluding them
• Upstander: someone who stands up for a person being bullied
• Verbal bullying: saying or writing mean things about someone
We encourage students to report any instances of bullying they witness or experience to you and to trusted adults at our school. Please contact us at Everitt if you need support in reporting or dealing with bullying. Additionally, if you have any questions about Second Step Middle School, please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information. Thank you for your support as we work together to build a bullying-free community.

Once you have enrolled in a school, you will receive a link to complete the household registration process in Infinite Campus.
Finally, if you’ve forgotten your username or password for any of these systems, you can use our new Personal Account Manager to recover or reset those. Questions? Check out our Infinite Campus Parent Portal page, the updated EnrollJeffco information, or visit JeffcoHelp.
