The birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is observed as a national holiday each year on the third Monday in January. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
The commemoration of #MLKDay as a Day of Service is a call to act on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.ās legacy as we work together to make our communities more equitable, build bridges, lead with empathy to address social issues, and commit to being of service to each other.
Make Monday a day on, not a day off. Click here to learn more, and to find links for service opportunities: https://americorps.gov/newsroom/events/mlk-day

Brookwood Elementary Counselor Corner
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! We hope your New Year is off to an amazing start. Our SEL topic for January is Growth Mindset. When students adopt a growth mindset, they view challenges as ways of progressing toward their desired outcomes. Growth mindset enables students to have confidence that they can achieve anything they put in time and effort to learn and work.
In the classrooms, we will be busy learning about what Growth Mindset means and how we can use Growth Mindset paired with hard work and perseverance to achieve anything we put our minds to. Below are some opportunities that you can help your child continue to learn about Growth Mindset. We look forward to exploring this at school, and we hope your family will enjoy it just as much!
Sincerely,
Your Counselors
Angel Cunningham (K-2) & LaKendra Todd-Collins (3-5)
READ ABOUT IT! - Here are some books to help learn more about Growth Mindset:
- Your Fantastic Elastic Brain by JoAnn Deak
- Beautiful Oops! By Barney Saltzberg
- After The Fall by Dan Santat
- The Dot by Peter Reynolds
PRACTICE IT!
Together with your child, talk about encouraging messages that you can say to yourself when something is challenging. Write these messages down on sticky notes or notecards, and place them where your child will see them, such as a mirror, their school folder, in their lunchbox, etc.
TALK ABOUT IT! - Here are some discussion points to help you talk about growth mindset with your child:
- What is a growth mindset and why do you think itās important?
- What do you do when something is challenging for you?
- What is something that you want to get better at? What steps can you take to get better at it? How can I help you?
- Are you afraid of making mistakes? Why or why not?
- What is something you can tell yourself if something is challenging for you or if you have made a mistake?
3rd Grade Learns about Watershed
Chrissy from the Gwinnett Department of Water Resources was here this week to present a Clean Stream Investigation to 3rd grade students. They discovered how water moves through watersheds as it makes its way to our lakes, rivers, and streams. They also learned how water can pick up and carry pollutants from many sources as it travels, and discussed ways to keep our water and local habitats clean.
