Principal's Message
Hello, Parents and Guardians!
One of the aspects of PBIS at Husmann is the fact that at the end of each month, we celebrate our school-wide efforts with an all-school assembly in our auditorium. We held virtual assemblies the last two years at the end of each month, but this was the first in-person, all-school assembly we have been able to host in our auditorium since February, 2020!
On September 30th, we celebrated our efforts through the first month and a half of the 2022-23 school year. Our school-wide expectations, which are Being Safe, Being Responsible, and Being Kind, were reviewed and celebrated. Our building-wide Paw menu was highlighted. The items on the menu vary from a morning chat with a staff member to having Mr. Sromek or Mrs. Fitzgerald come into a classroom to teach for 30 minutes! Our Cougar Cart was also unveiled. The cart will be coming around to grade levels once a month, and students will have an opportunity to trade in their paws for various items. Golden Awards were explained and presented by our Encore Team. Golden Awards are awards that classes have an opportunity to earn as a class in areas outside of their classroom, such as in Encores, in the hallway near the main office, and eventually during lunch time in the cafeteria. Our school mascot, Paws, was also present at this exciting event to congratulate our September Students of the Month from each classroom. Those students are chosen based on their ability to demonstrate being safe, responsible and kind during the given month. Our amazing HPTO purchased a T-shirt not only for the winners each month, but also for our entire staff to wear on our PBIS Assembly Friday's this year!
Also tied in with celebrating our efforts in the area of PBIS is the fact that we set a school-wide goal for the next month. Our October goal is that 'We will follow directions quickly and be kind to all classmates and adults'. Staff keep track of this goal and remind and encourage students throughout the month to work towards that goal. We will find out at our October assembly if in fact we accomplished that goal as a school, and if so students will take part in a 'Teacher Hot Seat' where they will be able to ask their teacher all sorts of questions they may not have asked them yet this year!
In order to continue to build on our home/school partnership, please take a few minutes here and there this month to have a discussion with your child about how they are not only safe, responsible and kind at school, but also how they demonstrate that at home!
Your Partners in Education,
Mr. Sromek & Ms. Fitzgerald
FastBridge Fall Reports
In ParentVue, under documents, you will find your child's results from the FastBridge testing done this fall. If you have any difficulty accessing ParentVue, please email hd@d47.org and someone will assist you.
Husmann Choir
Our choir has started off wonderfully! We are fortunate to have over 70 3rd through 5th grade students to sing together. We can't wait to hear them at their first concert. Thank you Miss Burke for offering such a fantastic opportunity.
Halloween 2022
Costume Guidelines:
Students should bring their costume to school. They will change into costumes at 2:40 p.m. Costumes should be non-violent. Please refrain from blood and weapons such as toy knives, axes, guns, and swords.
Parade:
If the weather permits, we will hold an outdoor parade that will start at 2:50 p.m. Students will parade on the perimeter of the building. If inclement weather is present, a decision to cancel the parade will be made by 1:30pm.
Following the parade, students will return to their classrooms and be released at 3:30.
Classroom Parties:
Parents that choose to dress in costume may do so without hiding their identity.
Doors will open 15 minutes before each party for parents that are coming to help. Each grade level is scheduling parties to fit in their schedule.
If you are planning on helping out at the party please confirm with your child’s teacher. We are collecting names ahead of time so that we can have name tags made up. This will speed up the check in process on the day of the party. Please check in with one of our staff members stationed at the front entrance prior to entering the building.
Dodgeball Club for 4th and 5th Graders
This will be competitive and your child will get poly-coated foam balls thrown at them and will be hit with poly-coated foam balls. While our goal is safety with distance between teams and aiming for below the waist, there is risk of injury involved. D47 elementary P.E. teachers agreed years ago to follow NASPE guidelines and eliminate this activity from P.E. class. We have no intention of changing this safe practice of not playing dodgeball in P.E. However, this club was requested by students and we will be glad to provide the safest supervision possible for this club in order to make this student idea a reality. We will meet in the gym on Thursdays, October 20, 27 and November 3. Register by clicking on this link: Dodgeball Club.

OLSAT and NNAT Assessments for 3rd & 5th Grade
Between October 3rd and October 21st, third and fifth grade students at all District 47 elementary schools will take the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT 8) or the Naglieri Nonverbal Test (NNAT). The OLSAT, a widely used measure of abstract thinking and reasoning ability, assesses students’ verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal skills. This year, the OLSAT test will be administered online (rather than paper/pencil) and will take approximately one hour. Teachers use test results to assess students’ learning strengths, predict success in school, and assist in the identification process for admission to the district's extended curriculum program.
Based on language proficiency, some English Language Learner students may benefit from participating in the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) rather than OLSAT. Such determinations are made by individual school teams. The NNAT is a nonverbal measure of cognitive ability and reasoning used in the identification of gifted and talented students. This year, the NNAT will be administered online (rather than paper/pencil) and will take approximately 30 minutes. Additional information about specific OLSAT or NNAT assessment dates may be provided by your child’s teacher. Please contact the school should you have additional questions regarding OLSAT or NNAT assessments.
A Message from Husmann's PTO
Trunk or treat is a FREE family event that will be held October 28th from 6-7:30 PM. We are excited to announce that we have added an inflatable game section, which is sponsored by Mizrain Yeverino with State Farm. We will also have two food trucks selling delicious, hot food this year for those who would like to purchase food (Joe + Dough and Kissed by Fire, which is pizza and BBQ). The food trucks will be donating a portion of their sales to PTO to support our Husmann Cougars. Also, we are still in need of candy donations and are still looking for trunk sponsors and volunteers so please feel free to sign up if you’d like to join us: Trunk or Treat Volunteer and fill out this volunteer procedure form.
- We are still in need of a couple volunteers for the Vision and Hearing Screening. Volunteers will be responsible for taking classes to and from the screening room. Please view the following sign up if you are able to help: Vision and Hearing Screening and fill out this volunteer procedure form.
We'd like to thank our volunteers this year! It's exciting to be able to have parents back in the building, and our TAP crew is doing a great job helping our teachers with various tasks. If you have volunteered in any way so far this year, THANK YOU! If you are interested in volunteering, please visit: www.husmannpto.com and fill out this volunteer procedure form if you haven't already this year.
