Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
September 4th-7th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Science/Social Studies: This week we will start our first unit in SOCIAL STUDIES. This will last almost all of September, then we will go back to Science. This week we will set up the students' Social Studies IAN and start learning about how the first settlers came to North America over a land bridge. Students will take a very short quiz over the land bridge on Friday. Then we will begin learning about the different Native American regions.
- Ms. Uhlenhake/Mrs. Thurston's Math/ELA: In ELA we are going to continue to practice reading intensely and thinking deeply about characters in the books we are reading. We will also continue reading “The Tiger Rising” as a whole class. In writing, we will continue to work on our Realistic Fiction stories. Be on the lookout for students to bring home Words Their Way to practice sorting and spelling these words. In math the focus of the week is on rounding. Students will be to round numbers to any place in any number. We will also continue to review place value. We encourage students to bring home their math notebooks every night so they can review information learned in class. This will help when students are studying for tests and quizzes.
- Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA: This week in math we will be working on rounding numbers to a given place. Students will be encouraged to use a number line and end points to help them round these large numbers. We will practice this all week and a quiz over rounding will be on Monday 10th. Our place value post test over everything place value, including rounding will be next Wednesday 12th. In ELA, we will start our second Junior Great Book story in our unit on Trust called, "Crow Call." Students will read and analyze this story all week. They will take an open book test on this story on Friday. In writing we will begin drafting our first narrative and work on adding exciting leads and complete endings. We will also be starting spelling this week. For the first week everyone will have the same spelling list and we will test on the 20 words this Friday. This will give me a chance to explain our spelling procedures and activities to the students as a whole group. I will be sending home information about how spelling will look going forward later this week.
Boosterthon Starts This Week
The kick off pep rally is today and we are very excited to start our Boosterthon fundraiser here at FMES. - Book orders are due by Friday. You can order online using our class code of GKCDN or you can send the order form and money back to me.
- Scholastic News will cost $6 this year. Please either send that amount in with your child or pay on the FMES website. We will love those orders as soon as possible, so that we can start using this great resource in our classrooms.
- Be on the lookout in Wednesday folders for your child's Seesaw code. This will allow you to access their Seesaw profiles in our class (homeroom or GT) and get updates and pictures from me about what we are doing here at school.
