We are here to support teachers. Here are just a few of the ways we can help you:

- create research pathfinders for your students as they conduct research for your class
- provide help for your various technology needs
- locate/order instructional and reading materials for your class
- assist you when you want to advance your use of technology in the classroom
- support you even when you have unusual or complicated requests and needs. We get all kinds of requests, and we're committed to helping you with assistance and answers. Never think any request is too big or too crazy. We really are here to help.
Get Caught Reading
If you have any pictures of you "getting caught reading" for our reading promotional campaign, please submit them to Carol Forbes. If you forgot to get a picture this summer, don't despair. Just take a pic soon. The kids love seeing new pics of all of you.
What's New In the Library?
Well, we are finally a library again, instead of a textbook warehouse. Yay! The library is now open for regular business. This year, the library checked out over 6,000 textbooks to our students.
That's an awfully lot of books.
HOT, NEW BOOKS
There are a few new trends in YA lit you may want to know about. One of the trends is to put a new twist on old stories, including: the classics, fairytales, and DC comics. Below are a few of these contemporary retellings. We will be ordering all of these modern remixes for staff and students to enjoy.
Pride by Ibi Zoboi
Based on the novel Pride & Prejudice, this book is set in present-day Brooklyn.
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White
I bet you could guess what this is based on
Catwoman: Soulstealer by Sarah J. Maas
The DC Icons series is a joint effort, written by a variety of popular, contemporary YA authors
RECOMMENDED LINKS FOR EDUCATORS
In this back-to-school edition, I'd like to do something a little different. I'd like to recommend and highlight a few of our GALE school databases. Please consider how these authoritative research resources can be utilized in your classes. Not only can the use of these databases help augment your classes, but they can help prepare students for research once they leave Santa Su. Teachers can use these databases to find articles and then easily save, share, and download articles directly to Google Drive, Docs, AND Google Classroom. You may access these databases through our SSHS Library web site or click here: http://www.galesites.com/menu/index.php?loc=santa
The password for our database program is susana
Literature Databases
We subscribe to 3 literature-based databases. The largest and most comprehensive of the 3 is Literature Resource Center. It provides biographical information, overviews, full-text literary criticism and reviews on nearly 130,000 writers. The LitFinder database focuses mainly on individual literary works, including poetry. GALE Literary Sources database allows you to search by genre. All of these databases are amazing literary tools.
Student Resources in Context
This is our most popular database. It is an extensive collection of research materials, covering almost every subject offered at SSHS. The database offers full-text magazines, academic journals, news articles, primary source documents, images, videos, audio files and links to vetted websites. This is the first database every teacher should check out.
GALE Professional Collection
This database provides access to academic journals and other reference content for educators. The Professional Collection includes advanced level research and professional development for educators.
Trivia Quiz - Winner receives a prize
Let's change the quiz a little this time, too. For this trivia quiz, all of the answers may be found in this newsletter. Also, all correct entries received by lunch on Friday, 9/14, will be entered into a drawing for our trivia winner.
